Spiritual Direction: a Practical Introduction

Pickering does a fantastic job to capitalize on the purpose of spiritual direction, one-on-one, in groups, and the pros/cons of each. Also, she uses dialogues between directors and directees, honoring all privacy concerns and practicing anonymity to expound on the spiritual director's skill sets, examples of when a referral may be needed, use of silence in session, as well as, prayer and icons to relate to the senses. My eyes were opened to the many ways to practice spiritual direction with directors of the same faith and different. I recommend this book to any seminarian or even lay church members wanting to spiritually and psychologically grow.

Very helpful

I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in any form of spiritual direction. Either as a directee or director, pastor or church leader, we all need this type of training if we want to help others and ourselves grow deeper in awareness of God movements and the contemplative in our lives.

This was a very practical guide to understanding the process of Spiritual Direction - both as a Director, and as the "Directee." As a parish pastor who engages in "pastoral conversation" on a regular basis the book was a good reminder and review of best practices.

This book is a MUST for all those beginning the spiritual direction training process and all those who are providing training. It is excellent from beginning to end. Sue Pickering is concise and to the point, offers many examples from direction illustrating her views. I strongly recommend this book.

Great read

This book provides a clear and loving introduction to spiritual direction aimed especially at Christians. Anyone seeking to develop their own faith, or to assist others to do so, will find it useful. The section on prayer provides a better clear and accessible introduction than many complete books on the subject. I suspect I shall be mining this book for ideas and help for years to come without coming to the end of what it offers. A real tour de force. Thankyou.

This book is a highly readable, well written introduction to the subject of spiritual direction. It gives an excellent overview of what direction is, what it isn't and how to recognise and avoid some common problems. If you are wondering where to start in reading up about direction then this a good book to choose.
