Speak Malayalam in Ten Weeks is a new book by John D. Kunnathu & Lissy John. This book helps the speakers of English to gain the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing Malayalam. This book was created as a second part to their earlier work, "Learn Basic Malayalam in Six weeks", which was found helpful by hundreds of people in the US and Europe. This book has ten lessons, which are built around ten children’s songs, which have been sung by Yesudas, the well-known singer. The songs are based on the traditional popular animal fables. Thus the learners have the opportunity to learn Malayalam as presented through the voice of Yesudas. By the end of the ten lessons, a learner will be able to listen and understand Malayalam. The learner will also gain the ability to speak Malayalam. Our first book focused on the skills of reading and writing, but this one focuses on listening and speaking. This book makes use of the contemporary knowledge of the language and the contemporary ways of learning. Someone with a basic knowledge of the writing system of Malayalam can easily follow this book, and rise to a higher level. A reviewer, Andre Pleasant, wrote: Great helper for learning a new language. Wonderful book! Another reviewer, Reba M, wrote: This book was a very thorough and helpful tool in helping me to learn how to speak Malayalam! Review: Good - Good Review: No, no! - What? This book is just littered with Malayalam writing and the English word or translation next to it and etc. That doesn't help me SPeaK Malayalam or act as Dictionary of sorts. Page 105 does give such websites that may be helpful.

Appreciation.
There is a need to appreciate the effort to understand the lingual restrictions among natives abroad and to actually make a book in an honest attempt to better the situation. Well done.

How can you learn?
This book may be a nice book for those he can read the lingo that the practice words and phrases are printed in. It says learn how to speak Malayalam, but without a cd or dvd, how will you know how to pronounce these words and phrases? I can see if the book title was, "Learn how to write Malayalam". I am not trashing this book in no way. I just want to be able to learn some things in a proper way.

Children songs in the past tense to learn how to speak?!? A joke!
I am very sorry, but all you‘re gonna learn in this book is animal names and totally unnecessary verb forms and nouns, which are absolutely no basic knowledge!!! I am a language teacher, so I had high expectations, but every chapter simply introduces a new fable. There is NO conversational exercise whatsoever. Even my malayalee boyfriend is shocked due to the lack of competence and creativity of the authors. In the 21st century, with so many possibilities at hand, creating a book like this, was unimaginable for me. Plus the exercises (simple random lists) are totally demotivating.

NOT for beginners.
This product is best for those who already know and understand the Malayalam alphabet. There is no reference in the book for the alphabet or phonetic training...Not helpful.
