Can this be used for brewing Spirits?

You do not brew spirits. You distill a previously fermented material that produces low level alcohol. You then distill this low level alcohol to remove water and concentrate to higher levels of alcohol. The hydrometer will give an indication of the water to alcohol ratio to let you know how effective your process is.

Do I need to buy a measuring 100ml test jar if I order this?

No, the hygrometer can be used with any container to hold the fluid. The hygrometer measures the specific gravity by sinking to its buoyant state within the fluid. If it is pure water it will sink to a depth where the reading of 1 should be observed on the side of the hygrometer. If there is a lot of alcohol in the fluid it will float to a depth where the reading should be around 0.9 to 1.0 depending on how much alcohol is present.

Will this be suitable to check if there is alcohol in my water kefir? I assume I would need to measure before and after?

Hello, this is designed to be used when making beer, cider and wine. It will give a gravity reading before and during fermentation so it may be suitable for you but we cannot guarantee that. Regards HBO
