I've read quite a bit online about this being a 'con', and mostly those articles that have focussed on the negative reviews only. My dog was a troubled soul from when I adopted her. She was very clingy and jumpy. I have been using adaptil for years now and I know that if she is climbing on my head trying to be close to me (and she's a cocker, so not exactly comfortable) or barking at shadows in the house, the plugin has run out. She is still anxious about many things. It hasn't magically vanished. These are more psychological things that time may or may not heal, but it does take the edge off her anxiety and makes her calmer. So, as ever, I'd say that it may work wonders, it may not. It may not be a magic cure, but it might be enough to make your dog feel a little more comfortable. I don't trust 'this is a miracle' but I don't trust 'this is a con' either. Worth trying and seeing how it works. The mark downs are only because there was a confusing upgrade at one point, we bought the new plugs, and then they seemed to revert back to their old style, which was annoying and which, as far as I know, they didn't respond to when customers queried this or compensate customers. Also it's generally quite an expensive product, so worth shopping around each month to ensure you are getting the best deal.

I've only had this plugged in 2 days and I have been turning it off at night so it'll last longer (which you're not meant to do apparently) but I have noticed a change in my usually extremely anxious reactive dog. His main behaviours indoors being him not being able to settle down for hours when people are over and accessively growling and barking out the window at people even when they've left. When we had people over yesterday instead of pacing for hours like he usually does until he's worn himself out, after about an hour he went and laid down in his bed which was a shock and also he hasn't barked at people through the window at all since it being plugged in he's just been staring which is a huge difference and makes it much easier for us to implement training. I was very skeptical about this product at first but I think its definitely taken the edge of his anxiety which when you have an extremely nervous reactive dog is amazing. I think with this product it either works for your dog or it doesn't and there's no real way to tell until you've tried it. This product definitely won't cure behaviour but I think it makes your dog feel much calmer and safer which in turn makes your dog handle those situations in a better way. I will be purchasing the adaptil collar to see if it makes walks more tolerable for him. Overall this product is very good and I reccomend trying it!

This product is amazing! Can't praise it enough. I have two corgis,One is 3 yr old, and 12 months, out of the blue my puppy just started barking at night as soon as we went to bed, and continued all night, this went on for 3 weeks!! by which time I was like a zombie, and I was worried about my neighbours complaining, did a lot of soul searching as to what I was doing wrong, and having being told by the vet to buy some ear plugs and ignore said pup, I found it very difficult but tried this for about 10 days, still no better, tried leaving light and radio on etc, nothing seemed to work,there was no obvious reason except anxiety that seemed to be the problem, he was fine every other time. Anyhow I read the reviews on here, and thought I've got nothing to lose, it arrived, was plugged in and 1st night he only barked for about an hour! took about 3 nights before he slept all night, and now both dogs are chilled out, and peace reigns in the house once again....They still bark etc and play appropriately, but seem a lot happier and calmer, if they could wear sunglasses and look cool and chilled out they would!! I can't believe this has worked so well, I was a bit concerned as it does get warm, but with regular checks it seems fine, and I have already got my refil ready to go! May not work for all dogs, but I am relieved it worked for me!!

Didnt work for our dog

We read the good reviews and thought we’d try this for our anxious dog. I work from home and he sits with me in my office, so I plugged one in there. After a while I developed eye irritation which got worse and worse. I didn’t correlate the diffuser and my eyes for a while, but when the penny dropped, I looked at the information sheet (which I’d previously ignored, as you do) They contain hydrocarbons, which are really bad for the environment! Also, there are danger warnings about its toxicity. It mentions danger to the respiratory tract and ingestion and if swallowed, immediately call a poison centre! It doesn’t mention eye irritation, only when it talks about the ADAPTIL Transportation spray, where in bold, it states CAUSES SERIOUS EYE IRRITATION! If it’s caused irritation to my eyes, has it hurt my dog too? It also states that you should dispose of contents/container at hazardous or specialist waste collection points! Who ever reads all this information and just puts it in the recycling? As much as I adore my dog and want him to have the best life, I didn’t notice any change in his behaviour! My vet had even recommended I try ADAPTIL! We also got the collar for him! I can’t say these products worked at all but I’m seriously concerned that well meaning dog owners will buy this but not realise the toxic fumes they are pumping into their own homes and environment. I took the diffuser out when I realised and slowly my eyes have improved! We’ve been away this weekend and completely forgot about my eyes, until we got home and they started stinging again! So, the pollutant is still in our house, despite unplugging it about 3 weeks ago. I’m now going to try washing the walls. I’ve contacted Amazon and I will be contacting ADAPTIL. Please think seriously about using this product, especially if you have young children: ‘MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED AND ENTERS AIRWAYS’! Also, your pets can’t tell you if their eyes hurt and what if they are chewers? I’ve been through so many bottles of eye drops, he may have suffered in silence! It’s not right! Worst product ever, I’d like to see the data from their clinical trials? Seriously dangerous and shouldn’t be on the market!

Just a snippet of background about my 9 month old ‘Show’ Cocker Spaniel Brenda; to help you understand a little of how genuinely stressful life for her & for us has been since we first got her at 8 weeks old & BEFORE we tried this plug-in device. So please bear with me; this bit is important. Brenda has a serious case of Separation Anxiety, specifically with me. She would constantly HOWL & HOWL & cry whenever she couldn’t either see me, or even touch me. We could even be in the same room, but if she couldn’t physically touch me, she became acutely distressed & cry continuously. Honestly, I couldn’t even go to the bathroom without her, as she would become too distressed & upset. We absolutely do try our best with behavioural training, which is vitally important & necessary always. She completely mastered house-training within about 3-4weeks; which demonstrates just how smart she is & how dedicated we are regarding good behavioural techniques. However , despite our most sincere, dedicated & consistent behavioural efforts, Brenda was still constantly anxious & oftentimes very very distressed when not able to see or touch me. I’ve had many dogs over the years & I’ve never known anything like this; it’s extremely difficult & oftentimes very upsetting for us too. So, to this calming plug-in device: please believe me when I tell you that the moment it was plugged-in, Brenda began to calm immediately, she really did. She has settled so incredibly that I’m absolutely astonished! I really truthfully am. We have changed nothing else at all; I needed to be certain that this plug-in was the only thing that was altered. We continue with the behavioural strategies, just as before. Brenda is so much calmer, to the point where I can now visit the bathroom without her tagging along every time; though she does still usually sit outside the bathroom door waiting for me. But this is a vast improvement (she no longer howls) & we’re working on supporting her to be able to cope with longer & longer periods of time without needing to be able to see me. Sure, I’ll not lie, Brenda is still acutely anxious & does still howl when I go upstairs or leave the house without her. However, her anxious behaviour settled a lot, the moment we plugged this device in. So, if you & your pooch are experiencing similar anxiety issues to Brenda & ourselves, then I’d absolutely 100% recommend that you try one of these plug-in devices alongside good basic behavioural strategies. There are mixed Reviews I know. But I’m telling you with absolute honesty, that this plug-in has helped Brenda & her family beyond compare. Please, do give it a try. I appreciate that they are quite expensive, but the benefits are so wonderful & worth it!

The first one I bought arrived in a broken state but amazon replaced it free of charge. I think the diffuser may have worked for a week or two, but after that had no positive effect at all. In summary, this did not work for our dog’s separation or general anxiety and instead we have sought medication from our Vet.
