![The 39 Steps [DVD][1939 version starring Robert Donat]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91iPQdPBRyL.jpg)

Product Description Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated British thriller, adapted from John Buchan's novel. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) becomes the victim of mistaken identity when a female corpse is dumped in his flat by a spy ring. He tries to track down the true murderers whilst being pursued by the police, and hooks up with an unwilling accomplice (Madeleine Carroll). Their adventure eventually leads them to a music hall, where the secret of the 39 steps is revealed. Also included is the documentary 'Hitchcock - The Early Years'. .co.uk Review A high point of Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood career, 1935's The Thirty-Nine Steps is the first and best of three film versions of John Buchan's rather stiff novel. Robert Donat plays Richard Hannay, who becomes embroiled in a plot to steal military secrets. He finds himself on the run; falsely accused of murder, while also pursuing the dastardly web of spies alluded to in the title. With a plot whose twists and turns match the hilly Scottish terrain in which much of the film is set, The Thirty-Nine Steps combines a breezy suavity with a palpable psychological tension. Hitchcock was already a master at conveying such tension through his cinematic methods, rather than relying just on situation or dialogue. Sometimes his ways of bringing the best out of his actors brought the worst out in himself. If the scene in which Donat is handcuffed to co-star Madeline Carroll has a certain edge, for instance, that's perhaps because the director mischievously cuffed them together in a rehearsal, then left them attached for a whole afternoon, pretending to have lost the key. The movie also introduces Hitchcock's favoured plot device, the "McGuffin" (here, the military secret), the unexplained device or "non-point" on which the movie turns. --David Stubbs

The 39 STEPS BLU RAY
5 stars for the film and the BLU RAY which is very good quality. The transfer is as good, probably, as can be sourced, and the sound and subtitles are very good. The extras include "Hitchcock The Early Years" and a Lux Radio show feature. The film is of course a classic and remains so today. One can question why Hitch made so many changes to the book, but who cares when the finished item is so good. Love it. However, a word of caution if I may. If you have the Carlton/ITV DVD with Carroll and Donat in colour on the cover, you may want to think twice about the BLU RAY> Yes, it is better, but marginally so (in my untrained eye), and you still have Subs and the documentary. Personally at this current price on Amazon (£6) I would go for it, but only at this cheap price. Hope this helps you to decide - probably not!!

A Cool Blonde And An Innocent Man On The Run
Iconic Director Alfred Hitchcock's First Foray into The Innocent Man on The run Theme. he would use it frequently Throughout is movies Most notably in North By Northwest but here in his movie The 39 Steps it as never been bettered. Based on The classic John Buchan novel British pin up. Robert Donat is Richard Hannay an innocent man on The run in a case of mistaken identity. This would olso be The first movie in witch Hitch would feature is Trademark blonde Here Madeleine Carroll fits The bill perfectly. like His earlier classic The Lady Vanishes The 39 Steps is filmed beautifully particularly The Scottish scenes with Hannay being pursued Through The Scottish Highlands. The scene were Carroll removes her wet stockings while Handcuffed To Donat is still Quite daring viewing it Today Though its just one of The many Highlights in This splendid movie. The 39 Steps as had various remakes since and all surprisingly Good in Their own right But again Hitchcock's original version remains a shinning example of British cinema at its very best. again like The earlier hit The Lady Vanishes The 39 Steps as been voted into The British Film Institutes all Time Greats British movies. Needless To say This exceptional Blu-ray release is worthy of The classic movie Extras include The superb Documentary Hitchcock The Early years covering all of Hitch's movies made in England along with The early silent classics. a full feature length audio commentary for The movie and stunning behind The scenes and production photos for The film round out a pretty neat package for This charming movie comes Highly recommended.

Good Vintage Cinema
Two very good films very much of their time but entertaining to watch. 39 Steps is of course something of a classic and is the umpteenth version of Buchan's story but one of the best. None of the films based on the book are altogether accurate but this nineteen thirties version keeps close to the theme of the original even if the details are not Buchan's. The 1978 version benefits from location shooting and all the improvements in technique now available but Hitchcock did a great job in his time. The cast of the nineteen thirties 39 Steps also contains some of the best talent the British film industry produced ~ Donat, Carroll, Tearle and Laurie as well as Hitchcock of course.Sabotage is quite an interesting commentary on our own age and a good example of Hitchcock's skill. I missed his personal appearance in both films however!

A very gripping tale
I have not seen this movie in decades and now I can see it over and over again. It is shot mostly on location. Which is good. The acting is fine. As is the action gripping. The plot is very believable. And it has a happy ending.

A classic film now improved, but..
I have had this Hitchcock version first on VHS cassette, then DVD and now Blu Ray as you could say I was a ‘fan’ of sorts as it never ceases to entertain - I also have the other versions with Kenneth More, Robert Powell and the BBC TV version with Rupert Penry-Jones in the starring role of Richard Hannay, so perhaps I could be addicted to this story line! This Blu ray version is very good picture-wise as its been ‘cleaned up’ a bit and far better then the DVD version as the small details are very clear when compared, however.. Like the Blu Ray version of ‘The Dambusters’ I have also reviewed on Amazon, the sad fact is it’s still in its original 4:3 format as in the picture is still the same size-wise with dark ‘borders’ either side of the screen but bearing in mind that lesser well known films that were shot in this format at the time of production, they have now been ‘digitally restored’ and made into wide screen, so its a shame these classics have not had the same process as it would be great to have seen these old, classic films in a wide screen format. Perhaps another time.. For what I have received and enjoyed with more clarity on this Blu Ray format I give it 5 Stars.

Never mind the age: feel the quality!
wowowowoww. Only ever watched this on a lousy print, lousy sound video some years old.So much here to savour in the acting ,the camera work.. we begin in the street to the sound of Music hall we see the feet of the hero, we do not see his face till well into the film. In the midst of what seems like real audience banter ,the first shock only minutes into the film, then our urbane hero, a real gent, find himself at the centre of something dark and troubling and we are off via comedy into the journey - a hectic ride through deceit,& through the glens, tumbling along with wit, romance and verve to the surprising, sudden, shocking, tragic ending. Nothing like it on the screen for the mix of wit and thrills - chases across the hills, stockings hung over the hearth, tenderness in a world where orderly English life is overturned and no one is to be trusted.Special memories: the haddock cooked for supper, such a simple homely prelude to murder; the taking off of the stockings, the gentle joy of the tavern keeper's wife... many others.
