Small and attractive - also does the job - WATERPROOF!
Others have waxed lyrical about the Misfit shine so I shall not repeat it all. The best bits are that it is waterproof and the activities include swimming. It has a replaceable battery that lasts 6 months so no recharging (for which read taking off wrist) It can be attached in a number of different ways - to suit different activities. The software on iPhone works flawlessly and is simple to use. It integrates with the new iOS8 health app for "steps". It auto syncs and syncing seems to work almost all the time. The ipad app is nicely laid out. As for the device neat small and unobtrusive it even includes a watch. One does not need a display on the device as the auto sync feature means the up to date data is always on the app.Negatives not really found any. I would think sleep function is based on movement so take with a pinch of salt. All said a whole lot more enjoyable than the pedometer of old.I got the "chrome" one and the colours are a nice touch. As an update I have now been using this device (and my wife also has one)for over a month and I love it. It works well, with the sync working first time on 85 - 90% of the time (if it fails turn your phone Bluetooth off and on again and it will sync fine)It integrates with IOS 8.1 "steps" and with "Myfitnesspal" app. The Calorie count looks high but includes of course you basal consumption (those calories burned just staying alive) It is totally water proof and steam room safe and battery strength is still high. It stays on my wrist all the time.Good looking , well thought out and engineered. If you want a neat fitness tracker this is the one I think. An observation is that it can be tricky to get the back off to change the battery (life is about 3 months in reality) DO NOT TWIST the tool in the slot you will knacker the case. Place the shine front down on a cloth on a firm/hard surface the simply push the tool into the 12 o'clock slot at 45 degrees hard and lever down on the tool handle slightly - off comes the back and not ruined case.

Simple isn't always a good thing
The premise to buying this was to start doing a lot more running to improve my shape. Bare in mind that I had never really been able to run for long distances. I started slowly by taking the stairs instead of the lift of my apartment building, walking pretty much everywhere, and playing 5-a-side football every week.So I soon felt confident to take up running and I bought the product. The build quality is great, the fit was fantastic, and the profile was great - I'm not used to wearing watches so this was small and light enough for me ignore it.Soon after my getting it I started my running programme and the psychological effect of being able to track you fitness was a great motivator in the early days. I remember coming home from work, noticing that I hadn't done my goal and just going outside for a few laps. All in all I can clearly say that it was a big factor in taking up running. In 3 months I was capable of running 5k.I also had problems during that time:- the device slips out of it's sports band during sleep and during football - I know of a lot of people which have lost theirs and the issue is mainly to do with the way the band is designed.- the syncing with the app is hit and miss, although this has got progressively better- the cycling tracking is awful - the device will go around my ankle but the tracking is never really accurate so I gave up using it like thatAll that in mind the biggest problem is the one you would think of the least - limited, ambiguous data. Here's what I mean:If you are just getting started with running, you needn't be bother with pace or distance traveled, I usually took time as a benchmark. But when you start to get serious and maybe join a group, the pace is the main thing you will miss. Misfit isn't smart enough to track that for you, or is it? In fact you could easily figure the pace out because the device does output mileage, so mileage vs time would give you a rough pace. However all of this data is hidden behind the API, the app being mainly simple (read dumb). This coupled with the poor cycling tracking make it a device that has a very limited use 12+ at most. For me I started using my phone for a lot more of the serious tracking and I still take the misfit, but I always wish I could have a GPS device instead of either my phone or Misfit.Oh and did I mention sleep tracking? It's good, but that too is hit and miss - sometimes the device will track you binge-streaming session as a snooze and when you go back to edit that sleep activity you loose all sleep quality data. Also what use is sleep tracking when you don't receive any insight? You have to make up your own insights and frankly this area of the app feel like the rest - too simplistic.

Great looking product but marred by buggy software.
This is a stylish activity tracker which is let down by buggy software. It is a good looking device which can be worn in a number of ways - on the wrist with a supplied sports band, clipped to clothing / shoes with a very strong magnetic clasp or worn on a pendant sold separately. The issue I have is with the software which is poor. Operation can be hit and miss whereby the unit requires a couple of light taps to cause the tracker to light up with your progress, but frequently refuses to light or sync. I think I will stick with the Shine for a while in the hope that a firmware update solves the problem. However - there are better although uglier options out there. This is a great looking product with average performance in a crowded market. The maker needs to address the problem.Update - May 2015 - I have given this device a real go but have found myself constantly frustrated. Over the past couple of months the Shine has repeatedly stopped working for days at a time. The customer support response has been "try changing the battery" - not the most useful advice. I really like the idea and the aesthetics of this product but it simply doesn't work!
