A Good Second Book
Although I appreciate this book. I would suggest that the reader have a basic knowledge of hieroglyphs before studying with this one.

Bought for fun.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, the presentation of Egyptian was surprisingly easy to follow and understand without being academic at all, a nice easy introduction, only been through first two chapters which are reasonably sized. However over 300 different hieroglyphics will be presented in this book so it could take quite a while to learn though I'm sure many be be related and not totally different plus the author does a very good job of presenting a hieroglyph with a little background so it's easier to remember. The pronounciation is not at all difficult and one need not be too exact anyway because this is Ancient Egyptian after all. Can't wait to impress some friends and read some Egyptian to them while at a museum, or even the museum curator even lol. Really good book and the author has done a very good job of presenting what's traditionally considered a difficult subject. Oh, and Teach Yourself have really improved the quality of their books in this new series, about time but thanks to them for that. Recommended, buy for fun like me or buy if needed as an introductory University Primer. 10 stars for this one out of 5 !

Excellent for self-study
An excellent book, clearly laid out with examples of genuine hieroglyphic texts from early on. Not too technical and carefully takes you from one stage to the next. Highly recommended.

Well Presented and Clear
I bought this as a lighter alternative (or supplement) to Collier & Manley’s How to Read Eqyptian. I like the way the lessons and exercises progress and would definitely recommend to beginners of Hieroglyph studies. It would be great if Bussmann produced a slightly more advanced follow up book.

So macht Mittelägyptisch lernen Spaß!

Textbook with exercises
I recommend first getting a book or checking one out from the library to learn basic signs and phrases. This is really more of a textbook and would be fantastic at the high school or even undergraduate level as a coursework program text. I love it .

A very complete guide indeed!
This book will teach you all the basics of Midle Egyptian with step by step lessons and practice exercises taken from real Egyptian texts. I was personally moved when I was able to read a passage from the famous Akhenaton's hymn to Aton.

Great introduction for beginners, or just for fun.
The new format of the "Teach Yourself" series language books is fantastic. The pages are larger and of better quality paper than earlier editions. Middle Egyptian is brand new to the series, so it is being printed for the first time in this high quality format. This is also the first release in the "Ancient Languages" series, with revised editions of Ancient and Biblical Greek, Babylonian, Old English, Sanskrit, and Latin, as well as brand new entries of Old Norse, Classical Arabic, and Gothic coming from 2018 to 2020. This book is called "Complete Middle Egyptian," but the author points out that it's more of an overview of the most common grammatical structures and 300 of the most common signs. This is fine, because there are already heavier and highly detailed grammars in print. After introducing the alphabet, the book dives right into short funerary inscriptions, royal and religious texts, and other pieces pulled from primary sources. Grammar is introduced in each chapter, but the book includes a 26-page grammar reference at the back, as well. This course is great for a beginner who may not be ready for the Alan Gardiner grammar book, or would like a thorough introduction before attempting it. I would recommend pairing this book with the Great Courses series on hieroglyphs: Decoding the Secrets of Egyptian Hieroglyphs .
