Specification says hold up to 500g, want to use for a 700g mosquito net above child's bed. Anyone used it successfully at this weight?

Hi yes it holds heavyer stuff. I have used it for many purposes and my doughter have even pulled their mosquito nest many times. Hope it helps.

does it work only on smooth surfaces?

Depends what you mean by 'smooth' Oliver. We had a flat in Goa and hung a mozzie net from the ceiling, using just one strip and without more than a quick rub down with a wet cloth. The ceiling was rendered and painted and was certainly not as flat as a tiled surface but it sufficed for a couple of weeks and unpeeled easily enough! Hope this helps.

Would they stick on a metal beam?

I would have thought so. I've had mine on the ceiling for a good 6 years and they are still there.
