High performance at a competitive price point
This is a very good drive indeed, and is the best performing of the regular WD drive line. The 'Blue' series drives are the standard good drives for everyday use. (These are the only ones that come in both SATA 6 Gb/s and the older PATA 100 MB/s connection styles; all others are only SATA). The max. capacity for these is 1 TB. The 'Green' drives are focused on low energy consumption and therefore have lowest spin ratings (making them slower) but keep very cool & quiet. These go all the way up to 6 TB. The 'Purple' are designed for low spin use with ATA streaming & AllFrame technology designed with surveillance video footage recording in mind. These go up to 4 TB. The 'Red' series drives are designed for RAID array systems. These go all the way up to 6 TB. The 'Black' series are designed for the best performance for gamers and graphic artists with fast spin-rates, Vibration Control Technology (VCT) and Corruption Protection Technology (CPT) to prevent data loss in the case of power failure to the unit. These go up to 4 TB. The only drive that WD make faster and better than the Black series is the VelociRapter series with the fastest spin cycles and it's own custom vibration and cooling bracket. These are more triple the price on a GB-by-GB cost ratio. See Western Digital Velociraptor - 1TB Desktop SATA Hard Drive - OEM These "Black" drives are really the best of the regular series for high performance computing. I have mine installed as a bootable Windows OS main HDD, and it outperforms the previous drive, even though it was only a 200 GB drive. You'd think for so little space, verses a 1 TB drive, that the 200 GB drive would be faster as there's so much less space to have to scan. But the WD Black is as good with five times the capacity. It's very quiet and performs quickly with no read/write errors upon diagnostic scan tests. The packaging was satisfactory (not an original fancy box). It was in an anti-static bag, with plastic spacers on each end, that was in turn in a cardboard box that was then placed in another cardboard box with filler. One little tip: If your are replacing an old HDD that was MBR format, and intend to clone it to this drive, then format this new drive to MBR as well, not GPT (even though the latter is a better system) to prevent problems in the cloning. The 5 year warranty is a real bonus as well. Just go to the WD website and register the drive. Such a long warranty (the longest WD offer for a product; others being 2 or 3 years only) shows that they've really put a lot into making these units in a high quality manner giving peace-of-mind for your data. I would recommend these drives to anyone looking for the best drive, that's affordable, for high performance computing.

A really fast and reliable drive.
A really superb drive. I have the 1TB version. After 5 years of heavy use the drive is still in perfect working order. Not a sector out of place. The drive can hit nearly 200MB/s and that is plenty fast for me to write audio to it in real time in my DAW. It's CMR which helps. The later WD Blacks get mixed reviews - they are not all made equal, but this is a superstar and I'm confident to keep on using it in another system when I pull it to upgrade all my drives in this DAW.

Great gaming drive with Western Digital's usual reliability
These drives receive almost universally positive reviews, and my experience is no different. I'm using this as a games drive and it has given me many hours of happy gaming with zero issues. Installation is simple, using the standard 4 screw arrangement or whatever HDD mounting brackets may exist in your case. Plug in the SATA cable and it's ready to go. This replaced an old 5400rpm drive, and there is a noticeable performance improvement even though I have it connected to a SATA2 motherboard and can't experience the drive at full transfer speed (I'll upgrade eventually). Western Digital have a great reputation for reliability and a decent warranty so I'm expecting this drive to last for many years. I'll probably buy a couple more at some point, maybe for a RAID setup, or perhaps just to increase overall capacity.

WD 1 TB 3.5-inch Internal Hard Drive - Black
a big thankyou to all those poor unfortunate people that had product issues due to poor packaging, amazon has heard you and rectified the problem.packaging was perfect, drive was delivered in super fast time time,no damage anywhere. took the drive out of the two boxes that it arrived in,removed the two plastic packaging mounts from each end of the hdd, then opened and removed the anti-static bag, sofar so good. fitted the wd black hdd into my corsair 260t case, connected the two leads, then switched the pc on.re-installed win 7,and all went well.the drive is super quiet,no rattles, whirring, tapping, vibration, just quiet.that was at 11:05 this morning.have run this drive now for 13hrs straight.done all the win 7 updates, installed ccleaner pro,to clean up the disk after installs, installed auslogic defrag and used it with no problems.used convertX to dvd4 to copy 2 films to dvd,and all went well. am pleased to say that all is still well, and will at some point be buying two more from amazon.so dont loose faith, every business has its problems.atleast amazon puts it right. happy days.

A perfectly good hard drive.
I purchased this as a secondary storage drive where performance isn't such an important consideration (the best raw performance comes from Solid State drives). Installation is nice and simple - find an empty 3.5 bay (or use a 5.25 adapter), connect the SATA data and power cables, and the drive is ready to be set-up. All drive parameters were detected by a relatively old (8 years or so) motherboard / BIOS with no need to configure anything other than boot priority, should you wish to boot from this drive and have others also installed in tour computer. Any modern computer should have no trouble recognising and configuring itself to use this drive. Performance seems fine - I haven't run any benchmarking tests, but there are no issues or any noticeable slowdown with reading or writing everything from small (less than 1mb word processing documents) to large (uncompressed, high resolution audio 'master' tracks of several gigabytes). The increased data transfer rate and cache of the 'Black' series of drives will make a difference when dealing with large files, and is likely to be noticed here. This drive is pretty quiet - once the PC case is closed, I can't hear the drive operating above the noise of the various cooling fans in my system. I wanted a reasonably large capacity drive to store files, in order to leave space for software installation on an SSD. I wanted reasonable performance, while reliability was more important and keeping the cost down a little if possible. This drive provides all of this at a reasonable price.

maybe WD will release a newer drive that dont vibrate really bad.
Having to send this back after 4 days... its vibrating and buzzing causing my tower to vibrate, also very load sounds coming from this, its deffo not right at all. I did read some of the reviews about this product but i just thought hey... sometimes things go wrong and they sure do. I would advice to avoid this product, maybe WD will release a newer drive that dont vibrate really bad.

I've had it for 2 months now and its a fantastic little bit of kit
Brought one of these to replace a Barracuda 1TB that failed. I've had it for 2 months now and its a fantastic little bit of kit. The Delivery was fast, arriving in 2 days. The product it self was well secured and protected in the boxing, An issue i've had ordering from other stores online. If you are debating if you want to Order a Blue or Black series, Id recommend paying that little bit extra for the Black. It comes with an extended warranty (5 years). Also from what i've read the black also has very slight performance gains, as well as better product testing, Making it more reliable. Making the Black a better all rounder for just about everything. I've lost 3 1TB harddrives just after they have went past the warranty in the last 2 years, So having this warranty will be a nice safety net !

Works fine in my iMac after a couple of mods..
Bought to replace WD hard drive in my late 2010 21.5" imac. There are a couple of modifications you have to do for it to work ok in a Mac but pretty straight forward. Am grateful for the advice given by another reviewer, "Pentax", who told me what to do. For the 2010 iMac you firstly have to shave off the locator tab on the Mac's hard drive temp sensor plug as there is no slot to take it on the new drive. I did it carefully with a craft knife. Next, I swapped the wires round on this plug so the darker wire was at the top and the lighter one below. These just pushed out of the plug ok with the thick end of a needle and then easily inserted back into the plug the opposite way round. If you don't do this your cooling fans will go nuts apparently. The drive was then good to go and installed fine. There is advice on this at: http://blog.macsales.com/19617-diagnosing-2009-2010-imac-fan-speed-issues-after-upgrading-the-main-hard-drive. Some bloggers are saying that when you do this the fans may not work properly and thus will shorten the life of the drive but all seems fine and there is a widget you can download to monitor the temp etc.. called istat. So, well pleased and while some reviews say that the drive is noisy, mine isn't at all.

Excellent upgrade for a Regular old hard drive, not a SSD replacement.
Significantly faster sequential performance than the wd blue. Very satisfied with the build quality and performance. This drive is basically an older RE series drive from wd made for consumers, has extra features the blue lacks which i suggest u check on wd's website before purchase. Packaging is horrible from cloud tail. try to buy from some other seller if possible.

Good hard drive.
This hard drive will be used to replace my source drive on an older Windows 7 computer when the older drive fails. One of the best drives you can buy, I have used WD Black drives for over 8 years now and they still haven't failed. Very dependable.

Solid and working well, as expected for a WD 3.5" drive
I recently lost a PC, and am going through a technology upgrade cycle, and wanting to have data redundancy and convenient clones of hard drives to test under various scenarios (different PC's, docks, cloning hardware and software, OS's, etc.) So, I recently bought four of these (One from Amazon, and three from another PC vendor). All four worked as expected right out of the box, taking nearly a 1 TB of Windows 7 OS and user data from other PC's via various drive cloning processes, and then showing up as expected and letting me acess and update the data just fine. The drives seem to run reasonably cool, and are fairly quiet (considering I'm running them in external open SATA docks for now), and the speed is fine. Just what I'd expect from a modern WD drive. I don't take chances with my data, so am happy to pay the premium for the WD black technology and reputation vs., say the WD blue. I can't report on reliability/durability yet, since I've had these drives less than a week. If I have problems worth noting, I'll plan to post updates. In my experience (from memory), over the past 20+ years, I've had a LOT of experience with roughly 30 WD drives. All consumer drives, size ranging from about a GB to 4 TB. I've had only two problems. One was completely my fault. Back in the day when they sealed the drives with some kind of rubber gasket, I tore a small section of that removing a drive from a desktop case the first time. (Not a HW guy -- didn't know what I was doing). That drive crashed in a few days -- which again was COMPLETELY my fault as air (with hair, dust, etc) got in there for awhile. I had another drive start making noises and refusing to accept a full hard drive clone via Partition Magic version 8.X -- probably in the early 2000's. Again, not wanting to fool around with my data, I quit using that drive. The main reason I've stuck with WD is the drives seem to be very solid and perform consistently. I've use lots of both bare OEM and full retail kit WD drives, depending on prices/convenience.
