American aroma hop Citra was created by John I. Haas Inc. and Select Botanicals Group joint venture the Hop Breeding Company. It was released to the brewing world in 2008. Now one of the most coveted high-impact aroma hops in the US particularly among craft brewers it boasts a complex lineage that includes the likes of Hallertau Mittelfrh (father) Tettnanger (US) Brewers Gold and East Kent Golding.Gene Probasco is credited with having first bred Citra in 1990. After trialing the new variety with iconic craft breweries Deschutes Sierra Nevada and others commercial acreage was significantly expanded in the lead up to its official release.Citra as the name implies has a strong citrusy profile. This is largely credited to its very high myrcene content. It has an extraordinary flavor profile of grapefruit lime and tropical fruits but despite its high alphas brewers often warn against its use for bittering which is considered by some to be harsh and undesirable.Musky tropical fruit and strong citrus make this a great flavor/aroma hop. High Alpha hop with smooth bittering and Floral citrusy tropical fruit / leechee fruit aroma and flavor (think mango papaya and pineapple). Best known as a dry hop in Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. Usage: Dual Typical Beer Styles: American pale amber IPA Typical Alpha Acid: 12 - 16% Possible Substitutions Cascade Centennial New Zealand Green Bullet New Zealand Pacific Gem or possibly Chinook AhtanumCitra is a relatively new variety developed by the Hop Breeding Company of Yakima from Hallertau Mittelfrh Tettnang Brewers Gold and East Kent Golding parentage. Its character is strongly tropical and lush with a host of fruit flavors including peach passionfruit guava lychee lime and gooseberry. Because of its distinctive and intense aromatics Citra is best in a late addition or dry hop capacity. Used as a single variety or in a blend Citra does well in American wheat beers pale ales IPAs Belgian-style ales and has been known to complement Brettanom
