Isle of lewis chessmen - full size complete set of chess set game pieces vintage and collectors

Received well packaged and in good order, with timely delivery.The pieces are a nice size, look good and sit nice in the hand , they are well defined showing good detail, nice ivory and brown colouring.

Bought these as a Christmas present and they are so nice I found it tough to wrap up and give away.The quality of the sculpts are very high and each piece has a nice, weighty, premium feel to it that I am sure well impress on the day and further into the future when on display.

Delightful set, beautifully made.

I bought this set for my son as 11years old birthday gift. When he saw Lewis chessman in British museu, he could not move his eyes. He was so happy when receiving the set. The quality of each chessman was super good. The size is much bigger than I expected. Now just need find a chessboard to suit them. Highly recommended for any chess lover.

The chess set has arrived and was very well packaged, they are weighty and robust pieces, the colours of the pieces and the feel are amazing, they are a great replica of the original Lewis chess set, they are so beautiful. These are going to be a Christmas gift for our 7 year old grandson who not only loves chess but also history. I can't wait to see his face when he unwraps these. I am sure he will love the story of the original chess men too.

I have owned a reproduction Queen and King Isle of Lewis chess pieces for many years but only recently thought about buying a full set and was initially put off by the price until I saw this particular set on Amazon. The reviews were pretty unanimous in their praise so I took the risk and ordered one. I was struck that two reviews mentioned that the detail and finish can be enhanced by applying black acrylic paint and then wiping it off, leaving traces in the grooves. This made sense to me, and as an artist and I would agree 100% with this advice. Without this the detail is definitely more difficult to read and the pieces simply look raw and very new. By 'distressing' or 'ageing' them by painting and then wiping away the excess, this transformation makes them infinitely more desirable and pleasing. It's a simple process and one that I thoroughly enjoyed, so one I'm rather glad it was not carried out beforehand by the maker/supplier! It was this advice that in fact encouraged me to take the plunge, and I have no regrets. Incidentally, I was confused by one reviewer who couldn't tell the difference between the Queen and the King as it's clear that the latter has her hand on her face and the King has a beard. I can only assume the reviewer hadn't treated his or her set with black acrylic paint as this level of detail is a lot clearer once treated!

My Isle of Lewis Chess pieces arrived today in perfect condition carefully protected in bubble wrap. Initially I was a little disappointed with the pawns, they seem small in comparison with the major playing pieces though they are historically correct replicas of the ancient chess pieces from antiquity. Out on the board the set looks very impressive displaying a good deal of detail and have a good feel and weight about them as you pick them up. I must say it's a wonderful experience to play chess with such a beautiful set, which reminds me, these full size chess pieces are really quite large so before you buy make sure you have a suitable playing board for them. I purchased a Mahogany Number 6 size tournament board which is ideal but I imagine a size 5 might suffice? Lastly my order was sadly but understandably lost or delayed in the Christmas rush period. I contacted the seller, many thanks to Lee at Chessmad who was friendly professional and sympathetic immediately sending out a second chess set in the post. An excellent chess playing set and great value for money. Highly recommended!

The media could not be loaded. I don’t normally take the time to write a review but I just had to this time.When I was a boy my grandfather carved a chessboard for us to play with. We played every summer holiday when I would go visit. Sadly he passed away many years ago now. But recently we found it at my Auntie’s house on another summer visit. But there were no chessmen to be found.I’ve been looking for suitable chessmen ever since and during a visit to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh I came across the original Lewis chessmen display. I fell in love with them. Now I have my own set and they fit the board perfectly. Well crafted and detailed, my daughter and I will be playing a game this afternoon and I’ll raise a glass to Grandad.Amazing price. Now I have them I realise what good value for money they are.
