Q: Could you paper mache on top of these to make them more durable?

It wouldn't be worth the work. What would your underlying base be?

Q: what do you suggest to use to color them? will simple markers work?

Markers and crayons both worked, also glued on tissue paper squares and even spray painted some for a certain project.

Q: Does it comevwith the head band come with or is it separate?

Mine did not come with anything. You could very easily just use scrap yarn to tie to the holes and tie around the head - or buy elastic string to do that.
