Q: what power source does the xch600 controller need

Can use a 9v battery or 6 AAs (battery case provided). The connection to the unit is through a regular 9v. battery clip. It can also use an optional 24v. AC power supply but you have to get the transformer. Lastly, it can run on a solar panel with a rechargable battery - pretty costly, about $130. Hope this helps.

Q: I am having a hard time reconnecting the battery pack after replacing the batteries. can't get it to snap into place. anyone know the secret?

I've had the same problem occasionally. Once I saw that the female portion of the battery pack had been bent slightly and on other times it just took some fiddling getting it to snap in. I've always been able to get it to connect however......................just took a bit of time.

No. It's completely self contained and battery operated.

Q: does this use electric power to operate? If it does not then how do the Solenoids attach to the timer box?

The designation of "hybrid" means thus controller can operate via a 24V AC plug in adapter or AA batteries. However with either power source the selenoids must be latching 24V DC
