does it take a sim card

Yes, no need a SIM card. It should be capable of EDGE services. Effectively, the modem is not useful for 3G data due to poor 3G/UMTS/HSPA radio. EDGE works.

Can be used as normal modem or it is a kind of router (i.e. hilink) with a private ip on the lan side with own dhcp server? for tp-link 3g router.

Inserting the modem starts an automatic install. Afterwards, if the pc is on, inserting the modem opens the dialogue,then you click connect then you can minimize. If the modem was already plugged in, you may have to click a shortcut kept handy,e.g.on the taskbar. When connected,if there is no interference from Norton or Firefox etc, one can navigate within the phone company's contract limits and as the local mobile traffic intensity permits. Cheers!

Hi, does this device work on serial port mode?

Hi! I only know it worked on any USB for me so far,so never had to use time looking into it. It's a Huawei product like all many dedicated to phone companies,so I suppose you could borrow a bit of time on a friend's PC and find out. I suppose the program on the chip varies though.. LG
