How do these compare to the MXL 990/991 combo? Similar in sound? I would not want to spend the money if they are going to sound virtually the same.

The 991 has a much more full sound. Both are great condensor mikes, but also have a very high SPL tolerance. I'm happy with my purchase.

Can it be used for gaming

I wouldn't recommend this mic for gaming. It has an XLR input (btw, cables ARE NOT included) instead of USB or Bluetooth.

I'm looking for a studio mic with a crystal clear sound, and absolutely no background hissing. How does this mic sound quality-wise?

the 550 very clean and crisp for vocals. If you experience background noise, check your signal chain, or ambient noise. The 551 is great for guitars, or anything (except drums) you might use a classic 57 for.
