Gardena Hand Cylinder Lawnmower 400

After reading some negative reviews on this mower, I was sceptical but took a chance and got one anyway. And I am really glad I did. This thing is absolutely brilliant (and for reference, I have been cutting lawns since I was about 12 years old using a wide range or electric and fuel mowers - that is 33 years experience)! I have absolutely no idea how people are saying it does not work, or is not sturdy enough, or the tightening knob will break, or whatever else they find to moan about. I tested this on my lawn when it was damp, and it did a perfect job at the lowest height setting. On dry lawn, it does an even better job! Compared to my old electric mower, this thing is so incredibly easy to use. I can't believe it took me this long to make the switch to a reel mower. One negative point I will mention however, which is the grass collection attachment that you have to purchase separately. Although it does its job very well at collecting the grass, it also completely undermines the manoeuvrability of the mower. It was an EXPENSIVE accessory that now gathers dust in the shed. When cutting the grass once a week (as you should) the cuttings are small enough to not really make the lawn look any worse for it by just staying there. Personal preference applies. Where before, it was an absolute chore getting the grass cut, now it is so much more effortless and actually quite enjoyable. And my lawn has never looked better. Seriously. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a small, medium or even large lawn.

This is a great mower if you have a smallish area to cut. It is well build, easy to assemble and easy to adjust the cutting height for the first cut of the season. I love the low noise, eco-friendly aspect and easy push of this mower. The cutting area is a good practical width (I wouldn't go smaller) and cuts quite well out of the box but, the only criticism I have, is that the blades on the cylinder are not sharp enough. Even with the fine adjuster the cutting paper test was pretty poor. As with many tools that need a sharp blade it is common to have to sharpen before it's first use. Sharpen it, keep it oiled to prevent rust and it I think it will last for years.

Only used once but cuts well. Just what I wanted!!

Portable, light and the cut is sharp to say the least. easy to adjust cutting height and cutting plate, no effort using this mower, I'd recommend spraying the blades with 3 IN ONE Ptfe oil

I purchased this mower back in May of this year, it arrived a few days later, and it was easy enough to put together. The mower cut well and did the job perfectly. However, there is a big design fault with this mower and that is the orange knob which clamps the handle into an upright position from when it is folded. This knob is made of soft plastic, and it is incredibly easy to cross thread it so that it no longer clamps the folding handle together. This I found after using the mower after only using it four times. I then decided to contact Gardena customer services, I found their number and contacted them, I gave them the part number and the young man on the other end told me the spare's Dept UK will email me with how much and when it will arrive. I waited two weeks and had no reply, so I emailed Gardena customer care asking them to get in touch….nothing. So I rang them again and talked to a young lady explaining what had happened, she told me she would email spares telling them to get in touch with me as a matter of urgency. Three days later a lady rings me and tells me the orange Knob will be sent from Germany and will take up to 28 days to arrive, I said OK and that I would like two in case it happened again. It is now over six weeks and I have not received the replacement knob. I emailed them last Tuesday 17/08/2021 telling them I will be getting in touch with trading standards and to please contact me this week to tell me what is happening. As of now, I have heard nothing. I should have returned the machine as soon as it happened to Amazon, and I guess I am now too late to do so. I would advise anyone considering buying the machine to not bother, the nob is not man enough and a design fault, and Gardena's customer service is non-existent. Gardena should hand their head in shame.

Great cut, quiet (obviously!), environmentally friendly BUT handle comes out when you pull the mower backwards. Very frustrating having to constantly push it back in.

Un peu sceptique, j'ai choisi la tondeuse Gardena 400 en me disant que j'allais devoir me faire aider (en tant que femme de 75 ans). Pas du tout ! Tout d'abord, le montage est ultra simple, intuitif et sans outils; en fait, il se limite à l'assemblage du guidon et du sac de ramassage. Ensuite la vraie surprise : j'ai vraiment été conquise par le fait que cette tondeuse se manipule sans peine et sans effort. J'ai été amenée à devoir tondre une pelouse d'environ 150 m2, qui n'avait plus été tondue depuis plus de 6 semaines en été, l'herbe était donc bien haute ! Avec ses 4 hauteurs de coupe, pas de problème : un premier passage à 42 cm et un second à 22 pour un rendu impeccable.

Only a few parts to easily assemble then it's push and play. Cuts well, is easy to push and turn, and removes the wasted time and hassle of fuel cans or electricity cables. I haven't used a push mower in over 30 years and hadn't appreciated how much easier they are to use in their current versions. I'm keeping the grass fairly long as the climate here is 40 degC so I've simply used one of the pre-set adjustments that is very easy to move between. I read other reviews before purchase that outlined the method and tool(s) needed to set to low cutting heights, but I'm not going to tinker with it and will continue to use at the pre-set adjustable cutting heights. Stores away easily enough and is light enough to move into the garden shed without any bother. Overall, I'm happy that I took the decision to buy this push mower.

Great for flat terrain and frequently maintained grass. It jams on any kind of bumps and can’t mow taller grass, so keep that in mind before purchasing.

Ich bin mit dem Gardena Spindelmäher sehr zufrieden. Er erfüllt seinen Zweck zuverlässig und das Schnittbild ist sauber. Die Schnitthöhe lässt sich gut und unkompliziert einstellen. Für einen kleinen Garten ist der Mäher perfekt geeignet. Besonders angenehm ist, dass kein störendes Kabel benötigt wird und der Mäher sehr leise arbeitet. Nach dem Gebrauch lässt er sich platzsparend verstauen. Insgesamt ein durchdachtes und praktisches Produkt, das ich gerne weiterempfehle.

J'ai un terrain d'environ 500m², avec beaucoup de petits obstacles (balançoire, arbres...). J'avais testé la Fiskars Staysharp Max avec son bac de ramassage à l'avant : j'avais été déçu. Le fait que le bac soit à l'avant fait perdre beaucoup de place lorsqu'on arrive sur un angle, et la tondeuse était très lourde et très peu maniable. Et si on avait le malheur de la traîner sur un côté pour faire une manœuvre type quart de tour, les roues en caoutchouc sortaient de leur jante (ce qui est très nul pour une tondeuse si chère). Là avec cette Gardena, aucun soucis de maniabilité, elle est super légère par rapport à l'autre, le panier étant à l'arrière on peut aller jusqu'au bout pour se rapprocher d'un mur, elle coupe très bien si l'herbe n'est pas trop haute (comme toutes les autres tondeuses manuelles). Les seuls points que je trouve moins bien que la Fiskars sont : - le réglage de la hauteur de coupe maximale qui est relativement bas : 42mm vs 100mm. Du coup je tonds au plus haut, pas besoin de tondre plus bas, on n'est pas à Bernabéu non plus ! - l'éjection de l'herbe vers l'arrière qui finalement vient un peu se mettre dans les chaussures. Mais avec le bac de ramassage ça règle le problème, donc aucun soucis. Par rapport à ma tondeuse thermique, c'est beaucoup plus rapide, je passe beaucoup plus vite et au final même si le résultat est moins nickel avec la manuelle, vu l'écart de temps de passage je peux passer plusieurs fois et je suis toujours plus rapide. Il reste toujours quelques petites fleurs qui ne restent pas avec la thermique, mais ce n'est pas gênant au final. Niveau nettoyage : rien à faire quasiment vu que la tonte est sèche, contrairement à la thermique qui broie et doit donc être nettoyée systématiquement. Ce qui est bien aussi, c'est qu'on peut tondre un peu quand on veut, et même en plusieurs fois secteurs par secteurs, contrairement à la thermique où je faisais ça les weekends et d'un seul trait à cause du nettoyage et du bruit. Bref je suis super content de mon achat, je suis pas certain de me resservir de la thermique de sitôt !
