It's not meant to be painted and remains flexible. But in a pinch one time, not having any wood putty, I filled a few nail hole and painted over them with no issues. Keep in mind, the putty does not get hard.

Can this putty be used on porcelin sinks?

I don't think so, the regular Oatey Plumbers Putty is for porcelin, this is a special one for granite marble quartz and corian.

Will this stop air from escaping?

If I took a guess I think it would. Stop water so needs to be air tight. Not under pressure though b

Will this work to plug drainage holes in planters so they wont leak water?

Probably. It is a clay like putty that you can fill holes with and it doesn't allow water to pass. It never really hardens solid though so it would be easily disturbed. If you want to permanently close holes, use epoxy with fiberglass mesh or just get a different bucket. You do want water to pass from plant roots so the plant doesn't drown, so I would leave at least one hole open.
