I recently purchased this dictionary for my 10-year-old, and I couldn’t be happier with how much he’s enjoying it. It’s rare to see a child get excited about a dictionary, but this one really brings words to life. The definitions are written in a way that’s easy to understand without being too simple, and the examples help him see how to use new words correctly in sentences. It’s been amazing watching his confidence grow as he starts using more advanced vocabulary in both his writing and conversations. The layout of the book is colorful and engaging. The fonts are large enough for comfortable reading, and the illustrations add a fun touch that keeps kids interested. My son loves flipping through the pages just to discover new words, something I never thought I’d say about a dictionary! Another great feature is how it introduces word origins, synonyms, antonyms, and pronunciation guides. It’s perfect for building reading comprehension and writing skills. As a parent, I also appreciate how it encourages curiosity and independence, he’s starting to look up words on his own instead of asking me what they mean. Pronunciations, Latin words/phrases and the meanins, synonyms (something all, perfectly elementary), syllables, adjectives, verbs if sort, hints, phrases, small stories and "word history" and "word roots"... etc... a fantastic elementary dictionary for any child. This dictionary has colorful images, but more wordage than images. I love the color coded alphabet to find the section you need quickly. My daughter is 5 years old with extraordinary language arts, reading, and comprehension levels beyond her peers, (not bragging, but very proud, yet very difficult to fulfill her ever growing curiosity and thirst for knowledge when I lack the moment of knowledge myself...a deer in headlights... Seriousl, mommies don't know everything, but we can try 😅...) I find this is a fantastic read for most children who can read and understand and can fulfill that ever deepening knowledge well that child wishes to fill. She also asks a million times a day: "how do you spell...??" Well! Here you go my dear! Fill that well! Teaches her alphabetical order, spelling, sounding out words, gaining deeper knowledge as to what something is or what some of those things look like! For example, the other day we were talking about "cells" because we are learning about why plants are green and looking in her microscope; well, in this book, there is a beautiful illustration/diagram of a general "plant cell". I am also endlessly fascinated by the "word history" and "word root"... some of this stuff I have absolutely forgotten long ago, so it becomes difficult to explain to my 5 year old, but these stories and history bits have teeth and the knowledge sticks and the word(s) become that more interesting. I absolutely have so much to say, but I'll spare you... I highly recommend this dictionary for any child through teenage years. I love it!

This dictionary is very easy for children to use or to use to teach children on using a dictionary. It has pictures on every page (obviously for not every word) and it has synonyms for certain words as well. I never thought my child would be excited about using a dictionary but he loves it.

Perfect for my second grader and her vocab homework! The print is a good size, not too small or large. The pictures make it fun for her to look up and learn new words!

Large print and easy to search for words .

I usually define words for my kids, but my 8-year-old has reached a point where I figured she could learn to find her answers rather than being given the answers. We live in Connecticut and I was highly disappointed by the fact that her only experience with a dictionary has been the toddler dictionary I had at home. This dictionary was bought to supplement the workbook that prepares her for the SBAT (standard test given to third graders). Half of the new words given in those passages cannot be found in this version of the dictionary so we still need to use my dictionary or Google to find the word. If you just want something to help them find words in something like Dogman graphic novels, this will suffice. If you need something that will help them with understanding their standardized tests, neither this nor the Intermediate versions are thorough. As other reviews note, the pictures are lovely. My daughter read the definition for “opal” purely from admiring the picture of the gem. I’ll give this edition positive points for fostering curiosity. It’s a gentle bridge from the toddler edition to a real dictionary. The most valuable lesson is learning how to use a dictionary at all. Unfortunately, this skill is not taught in any of the three CT elementary schools we have attended. No regrets on this purchase. It may not be enough, but it has been a useful tool in teaching a child to research.

Excellent for vocabulary building. It has all the words my elementary student needs to look up, and the illustrations and diagrams really help bring the concepts to life. Highly recommend for school and home use.

I purchased this to help my granddaughter learn to use a dictionary. The advantage over just Googling definitions is that the colorful illustrations on the pages spark discussion about other topics as I am tutoring her this summer. It's been great fun using this study aid this summer as well as age appropriate. It is much less intimidating than a standard dictionary. Because I bought it just for her, she is more inclined to use it independently. Another avid reader in the making.

After researching many of the children’s dictionaries on Amazon I bought this one for my grandchildren ages 9&10 and they love it. It is well laid out, colourful, printed on glossy quality paper and contains plenty of pictures. Surprisingly the school no longer carries hardcopy dictionaries or even teaches young students how to look up words online (according to my grandkids). Highly recommend this resource.

We purchased this dictionary for our two great-grandsons, ages 5 (Artie) and 8 (almost 9) Maxwell. When presented with it, Maxwell was immediately 'hooked'. He started leafing through it with the comment, 'I'll be able to use this'. That was all I needed to know as I could tell from his attitude that he will treasure it. I can honestly say that this is likely one of the best purchases we ever made.
