Q: I work with alot of wire in jewelry. kids got the scrap 14k gold fill and yellow brass mixed. if I use a darkening solution will it make sorting easie

Yes the brass will blacken as long as there is no protective coating on it

Q: Is this change (the antiquing) permanent? If does it need some type of top coat to retain this finish? If so, what is recommended? Thanks!

Yes, it's permanent but it can rub off. A topcoat is recommended to prevent this. I use a clear spray paint, either gloss or satin depending on desired finish. This does require a strict procedure to work properly. Proper prep cleaning is critical and temperature is a factor. Often I heat the parts first. Suggest you do some research and watch some videos if you're not familiar with this process. Otherwise you'll likely be disappointed with the results. It also often requires several treatments to get the desired darkness in color.

I was unsuccessful with door hinges because they were only plated and not truly bronze
