Nightmare Alley!
I ordered and received this scanner from Amazon.com. It was received in good order, and I attempted to install it the day of receipt, without any success. I was then forced to call EPSON technical support for help. It took me 3 days and nearly 2 hours on the phone with these technicians and they were not able to resolve my problem. It turned out that I had a bad unit delivered to me. What made things worse is that EPSON refused to send me a new replacement scanner, they say it's against there policy. They wanted me to bring it to one an EPSON repair centers, located two towns away. I figure, like most people, that if I buy a new scanner and never use it I should get a new replacement and not one requiring repair. With AMAZON's return policy I have been able to get my money back for the scanner, but I'm still out $35.18 in phone expenses trying to resolve my problems with this scanner. EPSON does not have an 800 phone number for technical support questions, and any expense incurred trying to rectify a problem with any EPSON product becomes yours expense. My advise to any one contemplating the purchase of an EPSON product, is to keep this in mind "you may be paying for more than the item you are purchasing. Don't buy EPSON!

Good scanner, sorry software
The scanner is a great piece of hardware, but the included software, TwainScan L, is very limited. The user can't easily adjust scan resolution or control brightness or contrast. Default settings are quite dark and must be adjusted with software after scanning.

Nice little scanner - very good value.
Having owned and installed many scanners, I wanted a new simple scanner for my private office. The Epson 610 installed instantly with the included usb cable, and I was scanning within 5 minutes. It's fast, and the bundled twain driver works well. Even the basic OCR software works well for basic word processing - but you might want to install a high-end OCR software like Textbridge Pro for more options. Color photos scan well, but you get far better color if you don't choose the 'quick scan' option.

Nice scanner.
Have used it frequently and works great. Quality images for my needs and is problem free.

8.5 x 11.7 scanner still usable in 2019
This is a solid piece of machinery unlike a flaky all-in-one printer. Uses little resources of your busy computer, requiring all of 32MB RAM Not the fastest at transferring full size scans at 600dpi, with just USB 1.1.No driver support since Windows XP but not free VueScan was just used yesterday on mine.I could've booted into XP instead, an entirely off-line no-network XP though.

jump from the year 2000 to 2009
wow look at the review dates (2000) vs today (2009) !! Anyways, I got mine around the year 2000 also and up to date, my Epson 610 is still very much alive ! I've been using it on various Linux O/S the past 4 years ! Though this scanner is old, its still valuable to all of us :)

A very good old scanner.
Almost sixteen years after release, my first scanner still lives. Its driver is not supported by Windows 7 or higher, but VueScan ( http://www.hamrick.com/ ) comes to the rescue with its own version.I imagine that modern scanners are much faster, and if my 610 died I definitely would not buy another one for $140, but if you find one in a closet or something, keep it!

Epson 610 lives up to expectations
Went the HP route first. Couldn't get it to work. Tried everyting. Punted! Bought the Espson and fired it up on the 1st try. Have had it for about 3 months now and coupled with an HP p1000 printer, I can duplicate, and I mean duplicate pictures. Scaned a professional 8x10 of my little boy to near perfection. The Twain software is great. Only down side is at times I need to place some thick stock paper behind the picture so I don't scan "through" it. I am now putting photo archives in the computer weekly. Very simple to use and quick. Great to be able to adjust BPI from 300 to 2400 based on what you want.
