Challenges with these Simpson Ties.
To start off with all of the measuring is almost comical. I am using full 8 " x 10" vertical beams centered on 7" x 7" plates. The base plate is 7x7 so water will shed off, I suppose. They work fine and the finished beam is beautiful but are incredibly difficult to prepare. I started with a practice block 8x10x18 to see if my idea would even work. The vertical plate sticks up 5 3/4" ,4 1/2" wide and 1/8" thick. I had to cut a 6" deep slice in the 8x10's and don't want a huge slice in the vertical beam so I plunged my circle saw in first to start the slice, which only goes 2 1/4" deep, then drilled with a 3/16" drill bit straight in from the bottom 6" deep and 5" across over an over. I then plunged a sawzall with a 6" plunge blade into it to hollow out the area setting on the plate. NO EASY TASK. Then after marking the beam with the 3 holes to drive the pins into I had to "perfectly" drill through the beams with extra long 1/2" drill bit praying that I held it perfectly level and square to the markings on the beam. I could not as it would walk trying to follow the grain so I chose not to go all the way through the beam and have the holes on the exit side out of line with the triangular pattern I started with but ... AGAIN, NO EASY TASK! I'm sure there were easier ways to accomplish the task, like with a 14" mill saw blade that would slice 6" deep but I did not want that big slice in the beam showing and did not drill all the way through so the only holes showing were the 3 on one side of the beam. I then plugged them.

This is the real deal
I purchased these post bases for a horse barn I am building. The hay loft which is very heavy will be held up with posts resting on these bases. That's a lot of weight. I only bought a few at first to check them out. Turns out they are very heavy duty and I trust them completely for my barn. They are exactly as presented in the ad. The quality and sturdiness is true. Just so you know my opinion.
