Q: when using with aquariums, does it take into affect the "immersion effect" for the light refraction under water?

Because of the different refractive indices of air vrs. water (1, 1.33) and thus increased backscattering in water to the sensor, you must multiply the reading by about 1.15 to 1.25 if the sensor is calibrated for air and used in water. This is an estimate. Salt and freshwater aquaria will be slightly different.

Q: How do you turn the logger / sensor off? Do you need to remove the batteries???

Just turn the switch of the PAR meter to off that is OK.
