I found "Avoiding the Con in Construction" very useful. The book is primarily written for those contracting whole home construction jobs, and deals with everything from what needs to be covered in contracts to how to keep from getting ripped off by unscrupulous salesmen.I am repairing a home, not building from scratch, so I needed help in managing smaller jobs, such as roofing, plumbing, etc. This book covers not only the legals but things as basic as how to interact (or not) with supervisors, workers, suppliers, etc. How to avoid issues, and deal with them when they arise.It is well worth the cover price, even if you only use a small bit of Ms. Ricchi's advice.

I've had friends in the past who've lost their a.. in profits stolen on the sly. This is a good read for anyone new to venturing the mortgage magnificent. But first from experience: As a builder, not homeowner; never finance these projects yourself. Find and angel; build credit lines over the span of 3-5 years, although you're building credit, never spend it, just front with it and let the new owners of the land finance your next new project!If you've lost money in the past and you're hesitant about entering the market again, read this book. It enlightening.

Every state is different about house building codes and regulations. And it does have a directory of websites of the official codes for each state but at least the one in Texas is so confusing that is wasn't helpful at all. I think the author could have included a little more information on what's important in each state for a few key points, like insurance.

This book is a must read for any new or old home owner. Kia will take you step by step through the construction process and how it applies to you. She lays bits of humor through out just to keep you focused. It is well organized, easy to read and easy to digest.
