Vacuum Cartridge Filter fits for Craftsman 17816

Works well for my small craftsmen shop vac.

I had no idea the vacuum could work this well with a new filter. I got the vacuum at a yard sale and replaced the filter shortly after. Much better! Had to reuse the nut from the old filter but everything else matched.

We hadn’t changed the filter in our shop vac in years. We used it for dry vacuuming in my husband’s shop and my wood carving loft. And it worked great. But this year we had a pipe burst and used it to vacuum up water. So we bought this filter to replace the old one. And it is great.

Tried a generic (Rigid) from home center, wrong size, this seems to be the best/closest match.There's a lip/seal on the filter bottom that fits in a groove in the lid. It wasn't fully seating because the filter top plate was hitting the top of the filter cage. This also meant there weren't enough threads exposed to tighten the nut. (My filter pleats are a slightly bent because I kept pushing down trying to get the lip/seal into the groove, before realizing the cage was blocking it.)So I trimmed the filter down a small amount, maybe 1/4", from *inside* the filter. What I trimmed is opposite that threaded top, where there's a molded unthreaded raised spacer. (The old filter top plate is pliable rubber, relatively flat inside and out. It wasn't the original but a Sears branded replacement. The original filter removable top plate was also rubber.)It's an awkward spot to cut inside the filter. I trimmed using a manual ratcheting auger drill, with a bit large enough to match the diameter (very old , was my grandfather's). Then I evened/smoothed with an X-Acto blade. Not perfect but good enough.I put the original cap nut upside down to form a better seal on top. I can add a rubber washer if detect any sign of leaking, but seems to be a good seal. The bottom lip/seal now fully engages into the groove, and the filter top plate is only about 1/16" above the top of the cage - close enough so that when I tighten the nut the top plate seats on the cage, and the threads are almost entirely used. (I did not measure my cut, just eyeballed & got lucky with the cut amount.)Mine is Sears Craftsman 12 Gallon Full Blowing Wet/Dry Vaccuum model #113.177825, the replacement filter it calls for is #9-17816 Red Stripe. So I figured this was as close as I'd find a match (and the old one was paper, not really washable).

The filter fits perfectly on my 4 year old 6 gallon Craftsman wet dry vac. The nut it comes with is unusable, glad I was still able to use the old filter nut.The new nut only screws onto the filter. It only has clips to grab the threaded filter rod. It does not screw onto the filter rod. So if you bump your wet dry vac while using the supplied nut, the filter falls off. The clips inside the nut do not grab the threaded shaft very well.The filter itself is great and saves you a few bucks over the brand name filter.If you need the plastic nut, too....then get the Craftsman brand filter/nut combo. If not, this filter will be fine.

I bought this filter for a Craftsman Model 113.177650 shop vac (17816 OEM filter). I was reluctant to buy it as a replacement because of the retaining nut, which is different than the "snap on" design of the original filter. However, this replacement filter fits extremely well and the retainer isn't really a "nut"; it's just a clip that snaps very nicely onto the spindle, actually better than the original Craftsman design. I've not had any issues with it wanting to fall off. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and will order it again in the future.
