Easy to install - NOT HARDWIRED
This is a super easy to install smoke detector. Includes clear directions on placement, read it before choosing where to put it. Just use 2 screws (included, with plastic anchors) to mount the plate to the wall and this twists onto it. No batteries to replace - 10 year battery life, same as the detector life so you replace the whole thing every 10 years. If it alarms often, or the temperature is typically too hot (over 100F) or cold for the battery, or you test it often, it may not last 10 years and the battery cannot be replaced. The warranty isn't real clear on whether that would be covered. The product page currently says this is hardwired, but this one isn't - it is battery powered only. No wiring, no interconnection. I've reported this to amazon so hopefully the product page will be corrected by the time you read this review. My house has interconnected detectors, but I put this one in a garage where we don't currently have smoke detector wiring - I know most people don't put detectors in a garage due to possible false alarms, but I feel safer having one there too. If you want hardwired, a similar detector (without voice) is the Kidde model 20SA10, or the 20SA10-V is hardwired with voice. When installing, once you twist it into the base it activates and the 10-year timer starts. After 10 years, there is a little tab on the back you can push the other way to permanently disable the sensor and stop the warning beeps so you can bring it to a recycling center quietly.Looks nice on the wall, can be put on a ceiling too. I mounted this on drywall so I used drywall screws instead but the included ones would have also worked fine. The plate lets you rotate the detector a little so it looks straight even if the screws are off a bit. Be sure to write the install date on the label on the detector so you can see when it will need to be replaced. Finally, it comes with a disposable cover which you should leave on if there will be any painting in the near future (or twist it off when painting). It blinks to show it is working and has a test button too. To test, just tap the test button. Holding it down goes into hush mode. No fire yet to test that part of it.Keep in mind it is prudent to have at least one detector on each level that also detects deadly, odorless CO, such as this one. This detector has voice alerts; if you don't care about that, consider the less expensive Kidde model 20SD10.

Works great!
Ordered this smoke detector for my fitness studio. It was super simple to install. No hardwiring required. It has a built in battery that lasts for 10 years and then you simply dispose of it and get a new one. It's VERY loud, which is great since it covers about 1950 sq foot studio with multiple fitness rooms. We placed it in the hallway and are able to easily hear it in all three rooms. Awesome find!

Great alarm but does not fit standard outet box. you will have to
Great alarm but does not fit standard outlet box If you are retrofitting old units you will have to drill extra hole to change their 3" pattern to standard 3 1/4" screw pattern for there plate to fit correctly. not sure why they don't offer both. would be an easy fix.

Don't cheap out on something like a smoke detector
The only complaint I have about this smoke alarm is that I really like the "ease of disappearing" some of the older 3" diameter ones we have possess—at 5 inches across, this is more noticeable. The best thing about this, to me, is that it's made by one of the most trusted names in household alarms. Kidde, to me, means that this has been over-engineered, and quality tested, etc. Besides the local regulations, the reason I buy smoke, CO2, etc. alarms is for peace of mind, so spending a bit more, if necessary, to get that seems worth it to me.Beyond that name recognition, the other attraction is the 10 year battery life—although, at least in CA, where I live, my sense is that this may now be required for non-wired in alarms. The voice announcement is a cool gimmick, and if you are near enough to the alarm to hear them, I could totally appreciate their value. The "beep" part of the alarm is almost painfully loud if you're close enough to press the test button—but that's just how it should be.

No wiring required, 10-year battery life
I was not aware until recently that smoke detectors can/will start to fail after 15 years or so. We're about at that point in our house, and even though I replace the batteries annually we've started to have false alarms. This is especially annoying in the middle of the night, obviously. If I have to replace these every 15 years, why would I bother replacing batteries every year when something like this is available? Enjoy a (hopefully) trouble free decade, then replace all the detectors and you're good for another ten years. The unit comes with a reusable dust cover in case your house is new construction or you're finishing a remodeling job. Once the dust has settled, remove the cover, turn the screw to connect the internal battery, and mount using the enclosed bracket. Installation is very simple. I personally think the voice alert is a bit redundant, but I suppose it could be handy for some.

Smoke detector with voice alerts and 10 year battery? Yes please!
This smoke detector from Kidde, a brand I associate with high quality smoke detection devices, features a 10 year battery and voice alerts. At first I thought that the voice alerts would be useless, but they are REALLY REALLY HELPFUL! When a sound goes off in the home, it's often unclear what the noise is about, like our home security alarm goes off so infrequently that our family probably would not recognize what type of alarm it is. This smoke detector emits 3 loud beeps and then voices the word "FIRE" loudly. Being able to distinguish WHAT is going on in a moment of panic could be the difference in savings lives. Great product!

I want to replace all of my smoke detectors with this one
I dreaded putting this up because I knew I would need to read an entire booklet of instructions. Yes, it does include a booklet, but the instructions are easy to follow, and it was an easy assembly. Most of the booklet includes helpful tips on preventative measures when it comes to a fire-huge plus. In addition to the easy-to-read instructions there is also an instruction video on the website. I would love to replace all of my smoke detectors with this Kidde Smoke detector. It is very well made and includes details that some other spoke detectors do not, including the voice alarm. I feel more confident and safer with this Kidde smoke detector, and I highly recommend it.
