Greek Beyond GCSE

Good news - the best got even better! The enlarged format gives even greater clarity and illustrations add new interest. The most significant additions to this edition though are the AS and A level practice passages which link with the examination specifications. The readings are well chosen and allow the student to feel that they are engaging with the great authors of the classical world. The second half of the book contains all the grammar and vocabulary needed to make this a fully self-contained study aid. Furthermore, the author will supply answers on request to all the questions and exercises.

An excellent follow on from the Greek to GCSE course, very clear and well structured progression through the material. I have the earlier editions of the Greek to GCSE books but prefer this new format.

In the preface, John Taylor explains that his aim is ‘to make the study of Greek accessible and enjoyable’. This book does just that. Although it is a sequel to the two-volume Greek to GCSE by the same author, this book is just as suitable for independent use by an advanced learner who wishes to improve on grammar and syntax, while revising key vocabulary and delving deeper into Greek literature. Complex grammatical points are explained with clarity which makes learning (and teaching!) them seem easy. Verbs and nouns are set out in user-friendly tables. I particularly like the notes (which appear in all of John Taylor’s Greek books) on pronunciation. This encourages pupils to practise saying the words aloud and of course reminds them that Greek was a spoken language and is still very much alive! This new edition includes additional examination practice with comprehensions and verse unseens.

A level textbook so not an exciting buy - expensive

Came with a mark on the cover, which initially looked as though it was due to it being folded over at some point, but on further inspection became apparent that it was a gouge where someone had pressed a box-cutter or similar too hard while opening the original packaging for it. The damage does not affect the use of the book (so far) and is only aesthetic. but still disappointing for what otherwise should've been a brand new item.

I was looking forward (possibly childishly?) to the fact that this book had orange chapter headings inside. I was very disappointed to find that the copy I have been sent has pale grey instead, where the colour has obviously been printed off in black and white. In my view, this detracts from the look of the product. This should have been mentioned in the product description.

This is excellent resource to reach higher level in Ancient Greek. It contains also adapted and original tetxs. I have been learning Greek for 4 years but I like to repeat grammar. Many books are available in the book market that deal with grammar, but most of them too boring. This book is entertaining and very useful.
