Does this isolate the chest very well? Do the handles come closer together at the top of the movement to squeeze the pecs? Or stay the same width?

Yes, this machine works ur pecs very well. I'm 6' and 240lbs been lifting since HS, upon full press the grips come to 4inches of each other, great squeeze. Love this machine and highly recommend it, I also use this machine to do shrugs. Dr.D.

How well does the gas assisted starting position work?

There is no gas assisted starting position this is not a hydraulic unit, it is leverage system only the starting position sits on a elevated platform position and then you press up

how much weight does it hold?

I love this machine , it's a quality peice for sure, very smooth and comfortable to use, if I'm not mistaken I believe it can handle weight in the 500Lb. Range, I've put over 300 lbs. On it and it was smooth as silk. Very good machine highly recommend.
