Using this for ...
We don't have to add supplemental heat for our mature, feathered hens, as it rarely goes below zero where we live. The key to keeping chickens safe in the winter is to keep them away from direct wind exposure while they roost at night. Wind will ruffle their feathers and reduce their ability to keep warm - it's like going out in freezing temperatures with an unzipped jacket that lets cold air in. We haven't had an issue with frostbite in our flock due to the more moderate temps in the Southwest. The reason for the need of a heater in our coop is we have 7 late bloomer chicks and a silkie with only half her feathers, due to molting. We are using this wonderful Chickcozy Chick Brooder as supplemental heat in the chick / molting silkie area only - as mama hen has 7 fast growing chicks to keep warm. This heater gives them a safe option for heat in a smaller coop and run. I've looked at other heaters and either they are on/off with no temp control, or they function as a basic space heater - blowing hot air. The worst is when heaters do not have a safety tip over shut off, as that can be a fire hazard (there are usually so many combustable in a coop). This heater has an easy dial temperature control that works really well and it has safety features. Perhaps the most awesome part of this little heater is the ability to convert it to a brooder - that is where it flips to a horizontal position on an adjustable height stand to keep baby chicks warm. I can see this also useful for other animals that need to have a source of warmth to survive. This Chickcozy Chick Brooder is so well made and I will add photos once it's cold enough outside for our chicks and silkie to use it as a source of warmth. The photos provided on the product page are exactly what it looks like. Meanwhile, I set it up in our kitchen and it is very good quality with a good amount of weight to avoid tip overs (it shuts off when tipped over). It doesn't have a timer or outside temperature sensor but you can add that at the plug in to turn off the heater at a set time or outside temp, if that is important to you. The Chickcozy Chick Brooder heats up nicely and the temperature really does change based on the dialed temperature. This doesn't blow air - it's more like a radiator - and that is exactly what we need. This Chickcozy Chick Brooder came totally gift worthy and most chicken fanatics (me included) would love to see this as a gift. I was pretty excited to be asked to review it and I always give my honest opinion on reviews as reviews help me make purchases too. Here's to your happy, safe, beautiful flock!

Great brooder great price!
Purchased this for my hatching chicks this summer and it has not disappointed! The chicks are kept nice and cozy, it has adjustable levels or you can use it as a straight heater. Stays nice and consistent and adjusts to the outside temp. They like to climb on top but it’s sooooo easy to clean seriously great! I love all my chickcozy products!

I love this heat plate and so do my chickens!
First, I've kept chickens in an area of broad ranging seasonal climate for a long time. Some years I've had short sleeves on 3 days before Christmas, other years the wind chill has made it feel like -25. I choose breeds of hardy chickens that can tolerate episodic periods of high summer heat but also survive negative temperatures with little intervention on my part. I have brooder lamps and I have had more expensive heat plates (Brinsea brand) for brooder pens but this one is equally as good, if not better. I love this one for my actual coop for my "big girls". First, it can be mounted on the coop wall to make a cozy spot for the smaller or younger chickens, or those going through moulting. It is almost no risk for fire if installed properly and, like anything else, looked after and cleaned regularly. As a brooder plate, it is very adjustable insofar as height and temperature. The temperature control is accurate (I tested it with a thermometer on the floor underneath the plate) and makes it much easier to know what temperature is being maintained for tiny chicks. My other plates did not have this handy feature. They were just either on or off. The included cover makes the consequences of baby chick poo a quick task. It is sturdy, easy to clean, resilient to dust and tolerant of other consequences of being wall installed in a coop with adult hens, some of whom are larger breeds (orpingtons, brahmas). They have been curious and pecked at it, even tried to roost on it! Thankfully, it is slim enough that they cannot. In any case, it remains undamaged by a flock of over 30 chickens and has helped them through some intensely cold nights this winter as well as give them a place to go and warm up during cooler days. *The plate is NOT meant to heat a whole coop, so do not buy this with the expectation that it will.* The only drawback, which isn't truly a big deal, is that there is no cover for the exposed upper edge when the plate is wall mounted. In a coop with an enclosed run external to the roosting/nesting area where it can be placed, this is not a big deal. In a coop like mine that does not have this, it can be tricky to find a spot that isn't under a roosting bar where it would get pooped on. It is an easy enough fix though. I just put a piece of plexiglass a few inches above the upper edge of the heat plate (not touching it), mounted at an angle so the chickens can't sit or stand on it and it has worked wonderfully. Overall, I'm very pleased with this product and so are my chickens. I would absolutely 100% recommend it. I will add that the company is also super responsive and very polite. We have their solar coop door as well (which I really love and HIGHLY recommend - it is truly the best and safest I've ever seen or had) and had a problem with the solar unit, which they resolved promptly and without any issue.

Orange brooder
This heater is orange with a clear topper that I almost threw away thinking it was packaged with that to stay sturdy. So don't be underwhelmed by the quality and throw the cover away, it covers the orange part. Im really surprised this withstands heat and I guess only the test of time will tell. It's not cold enough to use it for an extended amount of time so I can't comment on durability but it seems like it will do the trick. I am worried about it tipping over but it has screws to attach it to something so depending on the heat this thing punches out I'll decide if I hang it on the roof of my coop or the side. I'm thinking the side. And I really imagine I'll need more to keep my entire coop heated unless this thing is a super producer of heat. Not really sure yet since it's still too hot to test it out. Update: it's cold and I keep trying to figure out how to get this thing to put out some more than a slight heat. It's very minimal heat but offers hundreds of degree temperatures on the dial so Im so confused. I don't think this is a good producer of heat and I'm still using it but only for chickens that are inside my garage. That way if it does actually kick up heat I'll be around to see it. But this hasn't put out much if any at all for a few weeks now. It got down to 32° and I could feel it was warmer but nothing like my heat lamps. Maybe the heat is different. My chickens still alive but she's in the garage. I will not be putting this in a coop it would take way too many to give a tiny bit of heat. Either mines defective or this item is not a coop heater and I was mistaken to what it does.

It’s a two in one device with great safety features!
I chose to buy this chick heater among many other choices, because it seemed to be the most secure one to provide heat for my little chicks without cooking them before time and without burning my house down. I am working 12 hours night shifts, alternating with sleeping during the day, with very little time to spare on attending to my chickens. When there’s no one home for many hours during my work days, safety becomes critical. The chickcozy heater is very sturdy, impossible to tumble it, because resting on four legs. These legs are adjustable to fit your chicken’s needs during their development. It has a thermostat also, which is working flawlessly, giving me peace of mind while working 12 hours night shifts alternating with sleeping during the day. Another benefit is that now, when my chickens are fully grown I can use this device again as a wall heater inside the chicken coop during the winter months. I just need to hang it up, plug it in, adjust the thermostat and forget about it until spring. Of course, I will check it periodically for safety and eventually adjust the thermostat accordingly to the weather, but I have high confidence in it. I would recommend whole heartedly this device to anyone, especially to those who have a busy schedule and who have no one home for most of the day to attend to a heat lamp. Safety is critical, and this chick heater proven to be thrust worthy, light on my electric bill, providing me a two in one device which I will use it again and again for many winters in the future. It’s a great investment to have! Inspired by chickcozy’s reliability and quality, later on I chose their automated solar powered chicken coop door for my self made chicken coop, and in the end it proved to be a great solution for my peculiar schedule and lifestyle.
