I've known about this book for years, but somehow never got round to reading it. I was prompted to seek it out after seeing a TV programme that included a visit to the town of Matera in Basilicata, southern Italy. I have been there twice, and this programme reminded me of the importance of Carlo Levi's book in showing the more affluent north that there were people elsewhere in their country living in poverty, notably in Matera. The book didn't disappoint and I thoroughly enjoyed it. For those of us who are non-native Italian speakers it is easy to read - he has a straightforward style that means unfamiliar words aren't a problem - the sense of most can be guessed. I can see now why it was such an eye-opener to northern Italians, awakening them to the 'problem' of the mezzogiorno. I can thoroughly recommend it.

Cristo si è fermato a Eboli - Carlo Levi
I had read an excerpt of this book back in 1955, and remembered it well - how difficult life could become in Fascist Italy, Basilicata being a place of exile from Turin to what was then one of the most backward areas of Italy (arguably still is). After all this time I got around to reading the whole book. It was truly fascinating and well worth reading. My wife (an Italian national) read it after me, and was also fascinated by it. A long wait but well worth it in the end.

In a class by itself - a wonderful experience
If you can read Italian, I would recommend wholeheartedly that you read this exquisite book in Carlo Levi's original Italian. So funny, so precise, so amazingly insightful, so full of a detached, yet a comprehensive, love of the people he writes about. Once you read this book by Levi, you will want to read everything he has written.I cannot recommend this book more highly. It will enrich you.

Fabulous story/documentary
Carlo Levy's writing is direct and unadorned, but fluid and engaging, I am speaking about the original Italian language text. It was hard to put the book down- it demonstrates the evolution of the author's attitudes toward the Southern Italian back-country. It is his empathy with the people of the Basilicata that almost single-handedly altered the Italian political landscape of the post-war era. A bit of a miracle in itself. Well worth the read!
