Why is 14x14 twice the price of 20x20?

These filter are for dust and protect your equipment.  It isn't designed for pollen and smoke particles or people with asthma.

That’s a fairly niche dimension. But I think running this search term across the entire amazon platform would basically answer your question by listing all amazon vendors with a product meeting your specs: 14x6 air filter

(I did actually try it and confirmed I found at least one.)

Nuclear fallout is highly complex, variable, typically multi-faceted, and *importantly* very situation-dependent. The simplest answer to your question is: It depends. But I found this to be an interesting question, so I can give you a little more than that.   🙃

If a water or food source is contaminated, obviously air filters won’t help. But for something like aerosolized ash particles, air filters should be able to reduce exposure by inhalation. It’s primarily a size-exclusion mechanism. There’s some strategy involved in selecting the best filter based on particle size/density & timing the changing of filters. Proper handling & disposal would be key, since used filters would be coated in concentrated radioactive filtrate (that you obviously don’t want to contact your skin, re-aerosolize, or otherwise inadvertently re-introduce into your local ecosystem).  Having high turnover of your air supply would also be an important factor. (Fun fact: Your electric provider may be willing to make some measurements of air turnover rates for you at various points in your home at no or low cost to you.)

An aside (my 2 cents, fwiw):
As I wrapped up my response above, 2 kind of ‘meta’ thoughts occurred to me that seem relevant so I’m going to share them. 
1. Forethought is forewarned.  Foresight is highly underdeveloped skillset. So, props. Here’s the meta part. Knowledge is a powerful tool, but it takes strength of mind to wield it well. The power in knowledge is derived from your informed reaction to circumstances.  But we can seldom predict our future circumstances with certainty - much less control them - and it’s folly to try. “That way lies madness.” To maintain a balance - to be proactive without devolving into excesses of worry or efforts to control what’s outside our control - is to wield knowledge with strength of mind. imho. 
2. Not all sources of information are created equal. A wise person chooses them wisely. You got a little bit lucky – your question very randomly caught the attention of a an Amazon customer with a PhD in chemistry, who enjoys problem-solving, will take the time to answer random hypothetical questions, and do so with intentional care (specifically, to be informed and informative without sowing unintentional misinformation or malicious disinformation). You also got a little bit unlucky because the complexity of a complete and detailed answer to your question isn’t possible here. so you’ll need to seek some additional sources of information. Please choose them wisely.
