Decent Product
It's a decent book for what can otherwise be made a very in depth topic. This book is quite easy to understand, quick to the point, and not dense or too theoretical. It has less content than most of my high school textbooks. It is one of those few textbooks that I can say that I'm able to follow every word. You are a fortunate student if your professor elected to use this textbook.

More good than bad I think
I was absolutely shocked as to the amount of information presented in what is one of the smaller computer science books in my collection. The information is packed quite densely, which is not necessarily a bad thing, it cuts a lot of the fluff found in other textbooks. To cover computer organization and architecture in a single book is a monumental task, its difficult to make assumptions about what students do and don't know, so I take my hat off to the author, I think this book does a good job of covering the important topics without treating the reader like either a novice or an expert.I did find the book to be unbalanced at times (switching from novice to advanced topics and then back again), but I believe this to be a fundamental problem with trying to teach an advanced subject such as computer organization and architecture, each topic is dependent on some understanding of another. Its up to the student to digest as much as they can and then return to the earlier chapters later to fill in the gaps.I am disappointed by the questions, like some of the other reviewers I have found some quality control issues with the questions or examples and that the questions are often asked in a way that is either difficult to understand or doesn't seem to follow on from the material presented in the chapter.I write software every day (what would be considered high level software, really not what this book is focused on), and this book has given me a depth and insight into computers that I previously did not have, an understanding of their structure and inner workings at a fundamental level. It has made my job both more fun and interesting. It has some flaws around examples and questions, as mentioned by other reviewers and myself but the actual content is quite good.

Dry, wordy and an all-around pain.
This book is one of, if not the most difficult reads I've encountered in 20 years of technical book consumption.Generally, books of this sort fall on a sort of sliding scale from 'Dry & Concise' to 'Conversational & Verbose'. Straightforward references characterize the former and tutorial books the latter.Somehow, this book manages to redefine the with it's own throne as a striking example of 'Dry & Verbose'. It's as if Mr. Stalling simply wrote a clever parser to turn spec sheets directly into some robotic impersonation of natural language and cranked the verbosity to 11.Also, as other reviews note. If you're assigned this book for a course there's a good chance you'll have homework drawn from its chapter ending exercises which are written in the same wordy without meaning style and provide nothing in the way of self-checks to ensure you're on the right track. Finally, to top it all off, the inside front cover features a scratch-off code which is required to download PDFs of chapters 19 and 20 which are simply relocated chapters 15 & 16 from earlier editions. This comes off as a shady tactic to rig sales of newer editions and devalue used copies.

Worse textbook
1. Misprintpage 127, formula part block size would be 2^w instead of 2w. Number of lines in cache m = 2^r instead of m = 2r.This computer science textbook has been updated 9 times (9 editions) and still has basic mistakes. Therefore, students should not trust the accuracy of the content of this textbook 100%.2. Interactive simulations. This part is a joke.It is said "for access to the animations, click on the rotating globe at this book's website at [...]. This link did not list the chapters of the book or show the content of each chapter at all. Therefore, there is no such rotating globe sign on chapters for you to click on. It is a lie.3. This textbook is not worth for its price when it includes 2 mistakes above.
