how do you open the battery compartment ?

On the Backside of the unit one end has a slide door that opens the battery compartment simply stick your fingernail into the notch and push toward the end of the unit and the cover should slide open

How low does the trigger gauge measure?

Total length is 6 1/4" and 5 3/8" from handle base to inside of trigger hook.Works really well.

how to re calibrate the scale? the weight is off and not accurate. Mine did not even come with the manual. was there a manual with this profuct?

The unit should auto re zero Take batteries out and reinstall then power the unit on after unit is on it should be re zeroed then hold the power button down for 3 secs the unit will display P for Peak, lock mode continue to hold and the unit will display C for Hold mode which is the hold weight, you should use the P Peak mode for trigger pull weight and try to use the very end of the hook on the scale to get a more accurate weight I usually do 3 trigger pulls and calculate the weight of the 3 pulls if this still doesnt give you an accurate weight check it with another trigger scale if you still think its off return it cuz its junk Make sure gun is unloaded Lay the gun on its side on a table hold it with one hand and use the scale with the other hand to pull trigger Do this 3 times and average out the weight Hope this helps
