This is a full set and a replica of the isle of lewis chess set pieces. The original set is believed to have been made in the 12th century and was found during the 19th century in the Isle of lewis - scotland. The pieces appear to be made out of resin. They are large and heavy-largest piece being 3.5 inches tall. They will be wrapped individually in bubble wrap and then packaged in a large plain brown cardboard box.

great chess pieces
The pieces are lovely, and as advertised. The weight, the feel and the look are all properly medieval as befits this style of chess piece. All four rooks are the same design. In the original find there was variation among the rooks... but there were four sets. An excellent value for the price.

Not a bad set for the price point
While I received a few items chipped they quickly sent me replacements. The color is described not as pictured (cream and brown). Not a bad set for the price point.

Nice set, but.
I was having a game with one of my grandkids and made a mistake of playing in the tiled dining room. Couple of pieces were knocked of the table and a white bishop was chipped. I was very saddened by this event and will not use this set when playing grandkids. Live a learn. . . :(

Full size historical Chess pieces great to display or use.
Great set of historical Chess pieces excellently reproduced. Have nice weight and size for use on a full size board... 2 1/4 " squares. Ordered a book about the Lewis Isle Chess Men which adds to their enjoyment and mystique. Seller shipped pieces very safely.

My husband liked this set, but didn't know much about Isle of Lewis chessmen. He also received a book regarding them. Now he really likes them!!

Very good...
Very pleased with this set. It was asked if the rooks were biting their shields...as seen in the photo attached, they are not. But....still nice looking pieces.

A great buy.
This is a present for my daughter, who has a handmade chessboard. I have to say it's beautiful. Much nicer than I expected. A good weight. Not sure what it's made from, but a great purchase. Very pleased

Very Impressive Vintage Style Chess Pieces
My Isle of Lewis Chess pieces arrived today in perfect condition carefully protected in bubble wrap. Initially I was a little disappointed with the pawns, they seem small in comparison with the major playing pieces though they are historically correct replicas of the ancient chess pieces from antiquity. Out on the board the set looks very impressive displaying a good deal of detail and have a good feel and weight about them as you pick them up. I must say it's a wonderful experience to play chess with such a beautiful set, which reminds me, these full size chess pieces are really quite large so before you buy make sure you have a suitable playing board for them. I purchased a Mahogany Number 6 size tournament board which is ideal but I imagine a size 5 might suffice? Lastly my order was sadly but understandably lost or delayed in the Christmas rush period. I contacted the seller, many thanks to Lee at Chessmad who was friendly professional and sympathetic immediately sending out a second chess set in the post. An excellent chess playing set and great value for money. Highly recommended!

Wish Berserkers were biting shields
Happy with them for the price and have received today so did get before Xmas. Realised there was no board so that wasn't a problem, although I realise I need a bigger one than the one I had!!!My only disappointment is that the Rooks(berserkers) are not biting their shields as in the originals. I visited NMS a few weeks ago hence wanting a set. I am satisfied with all the other pieces but at the moment feeling a bit upset however it will pass.

Lacks crispness
A little disappointing given the cost. Maybe it’s down to the resin type material they’re made of but they lack clinical delineation. I don’t know how many sets they’ve produced out of their current moulds but there’s a lack of definition In the carvings And few highlights. Shame. Still using them though

Awesome chess set pieces.
These pieces are lovely and good value for money. Although there is no board it was recommended that a board with individual squares of 5cmx5cm is sufficient. As I have made my own board to this scale, I can say that the King just about fits this size so if you want a bit more space I’d go for a board with individual squares of 6cmx6cm.The rooks in this set are not the more recognisable “Shield Biter” rook that is normally shown when googling the set but a different variant. Either way it’s still a lovely set.
