Most of this review is the same as when I review the hub2 by showing how to add the universal remote to the hub2, suitably amended for the universal remote control. I have been waiting literally 10 years since the Harmony universal remote for an upgrade product, smarter and more versatile. Enter the Switchbot hub2 and universal remote. I have their other products, as well the hub2, and so it is an easy adaptation. For people new to them, the cost can add up. Just to be clear, the universal remote can be used on its own, but the functions are very limited. The hub2 is a very versatile product and if you consider their other lines of products later, it is worth investing in it in my opinion. The setup is very simple just following their on screen step by step instructions. You have 3 ways to add remote control functions - smart matching, add manually or use learn buttons. It is the third way that interests me most. I have a lot of odd devices, like karaoke, sound processor. So this means of learning is perfect for me. I attach a video to show how to learn a remote function to the hub2, and you can simply transfer all remote control functions from the hub2 to the universal remote later by synchronizing them, a very simple process. As for appearance, it is very appealing to me, white and bright, different from 99% of remotes out there. I don't like skimpy remote and the size is perfect. Recommended.

One of the most basic functions of a universal remote that every $6 remote at Walmart can do is send volume commands to one device and navigation commands to another. This cannot do that. Each device you add is an entirely separate remote you have to access from a menu and there is no way to combine them in any way. They sell this with the hub and I don't know why because they don't work together at all. If you add an IR device you can copy it between devices but you cannot trigger anything on one from the other. If you have the hub next to your receiver in another room and try to control it with the remote you cannot do that. You can only send IR commands from the hub using the app on your phone and you can't send commands through the remote from the app. It is a Bluetooth remote and that function only works with the remote and not the app, so you can't do any scenes that incorporate Bluetooth devices. The remote also cannot reach the outside world at all so if you are hoping you can trigger something in Google home or anything other than another switchbot device you cannot do that. This is by far the worst smart home device I've ever encountered. I don't understand the good reviews. It is hard to imagine how this could be a useful device for any home setup. I figured was worth the risk to try even if I only used it as a number version of my G20Pro remote, but it is even less useful than that one. If you are wondering if it could do something you need I'll save you some time, it cannot do it.

It looks very basic and not premium but it does the job. It does not have a working mic which is a shame when you think it iseant to replace the fire TV remote as one of its options

I had high hopes for the SwitchBot Universal Remote, given its promise to control multiple IR/Bluetooth devices and streamline smart home setups. While my experience wasn't entirely smooth, there’s still a lot to appreciate about this product. The Good: The device shows great potential with its compatibility across a wide range of devices like TVs, ACs, SwitchBot Bots, and more. The app’s customization options are a highlight, and for users who enjoy setting up detailed scenes, this can be a useful addition to their smart home ecosystem. The Challenges: Pairing devices proved to be a bit cumbersome and took more time than I expected. Unlike other IR remotes that allow for straightforward side-by-side pairing with original remotes, this product heavily relies on the SwitchBot Hub Mini—which already functions as a universal remote. For someone like me, who was hoping to avoid using the Hub for this purpose, it felt a bit redundant. Additionally, if you’ve had trouble pairing devices with the Hub Mini before (as I have), this remote doesn’t offer much relief. I found myself spending a lot of time adjusting configurations, which detracted from the convenience I was looking for. Final Thoughts: While the SwitchBot Universal Remote didn’t fully meet my expectations, it’s not without merit. A sleek redesign and streamlined functionality could elevate this product to a whole new level. For now, it’s a solid device that works well in the right setup but misses the mark in terms of innovation and user experience. If SwitchBot revisits this product with a facelift and some usability improvements, I could see it becoming a must-have in the smart home market. Verdict: Great potential, but room for growth. Rating: 4/5

1. Great customer and tech support: I can easily file support tickets in the SwitchBot app and always get solid responses within a reasonable time. As an early adopter of new products, I sometimes ran into issues with the firmware, and the customer support team could always relay my reports to the tech team and get back to me with fixed firmware. 2. Matter support: I love Matter because Matter devices can be linked to other smart home systems in parallel (HomeKit and HomeAssistant, in my case). SwitchBot is one of the few companies (if not the only one) that followed through Matter implementation. They have withheld their promises to bring Matter support to existing devices and are adding Matter support to new devices, too. 3. Innovation: SwitchBot Bot is obviously an outstanding innovation that has solved numerous pain points in people's lives. SwitchBot continues to innovate by not only keeping a tunnel vision on traditional smart home devices. I especially love the universal remote because it provides the most accessible physical access I need to access my smart home with maximum flexibility. 4. Solid build quality and affordability: Switch-bot products have build quality and durability. They are reasonably priced, in my opinion, especially when compared to other products that support Matter or HomeKit.
