The use of natural plant extracts to blend fragrance is integral to the 5000 year old cultural tradition of our home in Auroville, in the Coromandel Coast region of India. Pondicherry, a neighboring city was formerly a French trading colony supplying European perfume makers. The area's incense production is world renowned, and naturopathic herbal healing has been a way of life here for countless generations. Maroma has utilized all of this rich cultural background and combined it with a very contemporary commitment to Earth-friendly product content and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. This has resulted in a truly superior and diverse range of aromatic products. All of Maroma's home fragrance items were formulated with essential oils to elevate the ambience of a room by clearing and refreshing the air. The natural extracts in their personal care products such as soap, bath salts and perfume were blended to promote a soothing sense of well-being and inner balance. Maroma's Concern for the Environment Maroma's head offices and manufacturing facilities are located in India, which is one of the most beautiful but densely populated countries in the world. As a consequence, they are particularly sensitive to environmental issues and are dedicated to helping reduce the degradation of the planet's natural resources. The ingredients used in the fabrication of their products are recyclable and abundantly present in nature or taken from renewable resources. Maroma uses a minimum of energy resources to produce their products. They control and recycle their waste, and for the packaging they always choose materials with minimal impact on the environment. Their fragrances are primarily constituted with natural essential oils. However, some synthetic based fragrances may occasionally be used when that is a better solution to help preserve natural resources which are not easily renewable, or when they come from animal origins. Of course, their products are never tested on animals and all Maroma fragrances conform to the IFRA (International Fragrances Assoc., Brussels) guidelines & practice codes. Maroma's Home Auroville was founded some 40 years ago on a once barren plateau that has since been transformed into lush green area in which a vital young city is progressively taking shape. Auroville itself is an international project dedicated to human unity and the advancement of society in a fair and non-sectarian fashion. The community now extends over some 80 settlements inhabited by about 1800 people from India and 30 other countries. The residents are involved in a wide range of projects including environmental regeneration research, organic farming, renewable energy, green construction technology, handicrafts and small eco-friendly industries. These activities have become a major source of fair trade employment for the surrounding villages. Aurovillians also work closely with these villages to improve infrastructure plus educational and health care facilities. Maroma is the largest employer in Auroville and the biggest contributor. Each year, 40% of Maroma's profits are returned to the community to further growth and development. Maroma employs only adults and most are women from the local villages.
