how do you set the combination

Push and hold the unlock button to the left, while holding the button move the number wheels to the combination you want then release the button. Then write down that number and keep it so you won't forget it. We have 2 of the vaultz's, they are just the right size for us to keep our diabetic meters, strips & etc in, then we don't have the stuff scattered about. Also helps when traveling.

The combination lock on my case isn't working. I read other reviews saying they used a "screwdriver method" to open it. How does this work?

Unfortunately it means you (we) pried the clasp open. Of course this ruined rhe case and forfeited returning it. Contact the seller if you have something locked in there and let them know why you are doing this. Sorry it happened to you too.

Will this work with a 40 calliber Smith and Wesson pistol

I would never use this to protect a pistol of any size. This box is easily broken into. If you use a screwdriver as a pry bar anyone can break the lock.
