Probiorinse Probiotic Nasal and Sinus Rinse contains 2.4 Billion CFU (Colony Forming Units) of Lactococcus lactis W136, a probiotic bacteria with immune modulating capacities. Lactococcus lactis has been used in the food industry for over a hundred years as a natural solution against bacterial and fungal overgrowth, and benefits from "Generally Regarded as Safe" (GRAS) status by health authorities in the USA, Europe and Canada.

Lactococcus lactis is one of the only probiotic bacteria which is a cocci (a spherical form of bacteria), which closely resembles the natural "healthy" bacteria found in the nose and sinuses. This differentiates it from most other probiotic bacteria, including Lactobacillus sakei, which are bacilli (rod shaped). Bacilli are the major "healthy " bacteria found in the gut, but are rarely seen in the healthy nose and sinuses.

We believe that Probiorinse, by using the cocci form of probiotic bacteria which more closely resemble the bacteria found in the nose, may exert a more beneficial effect than commercial or home-made preparations using  bacillus shaped probiotic bacteria which do not resemble the normal healthy bacteria found in the nose and sinuses.

Can corticosteroids (in Flonase) destroy the friendly bacteria in the ProbioRinse?

This product can safely be combined with any other intranasal medication, such as corticosteroids, with no risk. It may offer an additional benefit beyond conventional medication alone.

The only exception to this is topical antibiotics. If antibiotics are mixed with the probiotic, they will kill the bacteria and they will only be partially effective.
