Anything less than 3/32 should be replaced and will be in the RED on this gauge. 3/32 is the universally accepted minimum tread depth for safe operation.

Q: Is this gauge display both in 32nds and mm?

No, it is just 32nds, but we will add "mm" in the near future. thanks!

Q: Is it true that it's not (numerically) calibrated correctly out of the box?

If you mean is 1/32 of an inch 1/32 of an inch yes it is. You could us this to measure anything from 1/32 to one inch right out of the box.

Q: does the pin stay in place after pulling it off the tire? the ones I have had always get loose therefor loosing the measurement.

I have only used it a few times but it has always stayed in place for me. Easy to read to boot.
