Rinse the filter before use. It has some loose charcoal that needs to be rinsed out or it goes in the water and you’ll see a tint.We have 3 cats and they all prefer the same fountain rather than the bowls of fresh water. For this reason, the filter is a necessity, and also because we use a fountain that has an open bowl* which the cat hair and dust can enter more easily.*Side note: We learned from another reviewer the risk of the covered water fountain that requires the pump to bring water up. If the power goes out, the cats wouldn’t be able to access the water (save with automatic feeders that are plugged in).As for filter re-use, we find these last longer than others we tried. We change the water every few days, depending on various factors (humidity, heat, foods they are eating). We add fresh water as needed to keep it full, and rinse the filter once a week. We clean the fountain 1-2x/week otherwise the slimy film begins to coat the interior.Doing all that, the filters work well ~2 weeks. More disciplined cleaners will get longer use.

If you have the Pioneer Pet Water Fountain then these are the filters to use for it. And make no mistake you want to use a filter if you are running a water fountain. These filters do a great job of keeping the water clear and free of objects in the water so that it is healthy for your pets to drink. There is another thing to I have found with these filters. About the only complaint I have with the fountain itself is it can be a bit noisy at times. Changing the filter every so often with a new one really reduces the noise I have found. So if you notice your fountain is getting a little noisy replacing the filter should take care of that issue. These filters from SmartCat are reasonably priced and do come in a three pack.

They fit perfectly. They almost matched my old filter exactly. Only difference was my old one were just mesh and a layer of carbon. These have a extra filter to help keep big particulara out. Then mesh carbon mesh. They filter at a good speed and doesn't run my pump try when in use like a few other brands I have tried. These are very good filters. They are easy to install and to clean. We used the fountain that went with these filters for several years. A year and a half ago, my husband bought a new fountain, and I retired the fountain that went with these filters. The older fountain has more noise and vibration than the new one and only one of three pets would use it. I actually like these filters better because they are easier to change.

I have the Feng Shui model of the Pioneer Pet fountain and these replacement filters work perfectly. I can usually get a few months of use out of a single filter by keeping the fountain washed/clean and totally replacing the water weekly. Once it starts getting slimy I change the filter out, so it's nice that these come in a multi-pack to have on hand. And the filters really do collect some of the gross things that would find its way into the water dish - mostly cat hair, but I once found a rogue bug that fell in and got trapped in the filter as well. I also use distilled water and not tap water.
