Perfect after a quick, easy modification
First, let's dispell the myth of the "uncrackable" safe. Applying such an unreasonable standard is nonsense for any safe because EVERY safe is vulnerable in some way. SentrySafe specifically states that this is to deter the "opportunistic" thief, so this is not expected to thwart the professional criminal with power tools handy. Read my recommendations below and you will be able to keep your belongings secure against most minor to mid-level attempts at breaking into the safe. I was undecided on whether to select the SentrySafe X055 Security Safe or the Stack-On PS-514 Personal Safe with Electronic Lock and chose the SentrySafe because YouTube is LOADED with quick, easy ways to break into the Stack-on PS-514. More than likely, most of the same techniques are also easily applied to the SentrySafe, but I just went with the one that was less visible on YouTube. There was also a small price difference in favor of the SentrySafe. I did like Stack-on's time-out period that goes into effect after three failed entry attempts using the passcode, but with the modifications I describe below it is less important. Here is my recommendation to **REALLY** secure the safe: 1. Bolt this baby to the floor! If you are burgled and this isn't bolted down, the burglers will not waste their time trying to crack the safe, they are just going to take it with them! 2. This should be common sense, but do not make the passcode your birthday or your anniversary, or anything else so painfully obvious and easy to look up. 3. Here is my modification: I added a Refrigerator Door Lock with Padlock - Black with a Sesamee K436 4 Dial Bottom Resettable Combination Brass Padlock with 1-Inch Hardened Steel Shackle and 10,000 Potential Combinations . This means that even if you can crack the digital padlock or keyhole on the safe, you still have to either cut the cable on the refrigerator lock or somehow break through the Sesamee K436 4 Dial Bottom Resettable Combination Brass Padlock with 1-Inch Hardened Steel Shackle and 10,000 Potential Combinations . I opted for Sesamee because of all the online videos on how to bypass a MasterLock padlock (it is easy). This will only slow down a burglar, but most teens or children (or other nosy family and friends) will be unwilling to actually damage the refrigerator lock or padlock in a way that makes it obvious that it has been tampered with. 4. I keep the spare safe keys in a Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, 1-Pack discreetly placed in another room of the house. Yes, there are a total of three combinations to remember, but they are necessary for maximum security against unauthorized access. The modification is done for the purpose of keeping others out, and it does make it slower to get into the safe, so if you keep a loaded firearm in there in case of an intruder, you may not want to add an extra step for access that might slow you down. It depends on your priorities and what you are trying to keep safe. The refrigerator lock protects against typical break-in methods like lock picking, "bumping," and the way-too-easy paperclip tricks which these kinds of safes are susceptible to. It still isn't "unbreakable," but it is WAY more difficult to get into without the codes and is only a few seconds more for me to get into. For those of you who need a locked place to store things with very little threat of someone trying to pick the lock, this safe is fine as-is. If you have someone living with you or someone who has regular access that may be apt to try to break into the safe, I recommend this modification. There is additional security in redundancy.

Perfect For A Dorm Room
This is not a heavy duty fire safe, nor is it designed to be. It is a nice sized security box for a small office or dorm room. I bought this for my daughter's dorm room. The construction quality is quite good. And the 1.0 Cubic foot size allows her to put her 13" Mac Book in with no problems. It comes with an upper shelf which is good for cell phones, iPods, prescriptions, keys, etc. Plus, even with her laptop in the bottom, there is still plenty of extra room for other things. Two additional features make it ideal for my daughter's dorm room: First, is the backup key lock. Once you set your electronic combination, there should be no problems, but if there is, you can override the keypad with a key. The safe comes with 2 keys, so I gave one to my daughter as a backup, and keep one in my safe (a real fire safe) at home, in case I ever have to overnight it up to her. Second (and this is very important for a dorm room, or a room where you can not anchor the safe into wall studs), is the cable system, which is included. It allows you to loop the supplied cable around a cross member under a bed, or desk, and attach it, through the back, to a spring clamp bolted inside the safe. Now this isn't "theft proof" by any means, but removing the safe would require carrying her dorm bed down the hall with it, taking an axe to break up the bed frame, or having a nice pair of bolt cutters to cut the anchor cable. Anyway, one would hope that it's enough to make it "too hard a target" for the casual opportunist to bother with. Amazon's combination of price and free shipping was the best I found on this safe. So, if you need a decent, locking, security box, capable of being cable anchored to furniture or fixtures, and large enough to fit a laptop and a bunch of accessories, I would really recommend this.

Great for college dorms
I got 2 of these for my daughters in college. Works great to store meds, extra keys, cash etc. I added a cable master lock (Master Lock 719D Steel Cable with Integrated Outdoor Padlock with Key, 1 Pack) to secure it to the bed frame. You will have to drill out the holes in the back just a bit to get the cable through the safe wall. Highly recommend it for any colllege student.

Sentry Safe X055 Product Appraisal
The X055 is an ideal product for those of you who want to keep a few small items for a relatively cheap price. When evaluating this product, it is important that you take into account durability, accessibility, price, and effectiveness. Ideal Uses For those customers that are looking to keep a few items secure without breaking the bank, so to speak, then you may find that the Sentry X0555 is the safe for you. Compared to most safes, it is small in size, and is roughly the shape of a piece of paper with the height of a copy paper box. Effective uses for you would include cash, small weapons, or cherished photos of your family. Durability After a year of use, you will not find issues with the durability of the safe. I have not found any issues that would indicate that this safe would fail under non-extreme conditions. Fortunately, I have not had the opportunity to know how this safe would perform under extreme conditions like fire. I suspect that it would not make it out of a burnt house due to the fact that it is a bit more thin than a safe that is more expensive. The safe is constructed out of pry-resistant steel so your personal belongings will not be easily accessed by anyone who tries to get in this safe. Accessibility The safe is quite easy to access for someone who has the code, so you, the intended user, will not be held up in the case of an emergency. It is unlocked via an electronic keypad with a four to eight number combination code. Effectiveness This SentrySafe is something you will immediately find effective. As stated about, your personal items are very well protected within the confines of the steel, and is not easily accessed by someone without the combination. In addition to these benefits, you are provided with mounting screws so you have the freedom to place this safe in the location of your choosing. Price The price of the SentrySafe X055 will please you. The price of the safe, with shipping, is only $66.40, far less than the price of protecting your valuables. There are comparable safes on Amazon, but ones that are far more expensive than the SentrySafe X055. I hope that you enjoy the benefits of the SentrySafe X055!

For its intended purpose it is a good safe. It is not intended to provide substantial ...
After reading some of the complaints and using the safe for several months I had to leave a review. For its intended purpose it is a good safe. It is not intended to provide substantial security from burglars, fires, or miscreant children. It can be easily walked off with or broken open given enough time. Any consumer safe can be broken into, the question is how long and what tools and methods are needed. I broke into another brand's equivalent safe in a couple minutes with a hammer and screwdriver when it stopped functioning. I've seen Youtube videos about bumping the safe a certain way to unlock the magnetic mechanism. If you need increased security, spend more than a modest amount on a safe that is intended to provide security and fire protection. This safe works well for easy, quick access that still provides a level of protection from access by children. I think it is satisfactory for daily carry firearms or modest amounts of cash or valuables. I bolted mine to a shelf with self-locking nuts and large washers. That should provide a couple more minutes of time, which may prevent a smash and grab. But if you have high-dollar jewelry, cash, firearms, valuables or important documents, I would acquire a better safe. The battery compartment works fine for me, as does the locking mechanism, door and keypad. It would be nice if the second shelf were adjustable and deeper, but it is fine.

AWESOME!
Dear amazon Friends, I actually hardly ever write reviews, but this one deserves one. This Sentry safe is a ltttle bigger than it looks in pic, ((tho displayed dimentions are correct). I just programed my own code. (Note: each code can only be used once) It was easy as instructions said. (the house code given with it is the same for ALL this model, so be sure to change it)! AND you can send into Sentry (with Notorized ID'd paperwork as registered owner of item serial# if fjorget or need another key-small charge) The key works great as well, and alarm does not go off if key is used as back-up. Batteries popped out until the face plate was installed over them. I secured them with a sm piece of packing tape over this as another reviewer said that her batts fell out when door was closed. This did not happen but just in case... It is exactly as stated. Clean, simple, safe & secure. (especially if bolted to floor & wall as suggested)-tho only "two" bolts -no washers-were included and four holes are available. I feel it will be difficult to walk away with (if bolted down) and or get into without a lot of bad guy time involved. So all in all, GOOD investment. (unlike my stocks-which I WON"T be including in the safe) : }

POOR CHEAP PLASTIC COMPONENTS
I would give this a ZERO if I could. The turn knob is made of cheap plastic and breaks easily. I had important documents inside. The cheap plastic turn knob broke and I had to use the manual key to turn it to the unlock position and simultaneously manually pry open the door using a screw driver which I inserted into the slot where the turn knob sits. Sentry has clearly manufactured a surdy looking safe on the exterior BUT with extremely cheap plastic components in the interior and the main safety lock components are cheap and made of poor quality. They almost certainly will break easily for each and every person that buys this item. It is only a matter of time. Mine broke in a few months. In the case of others they will break in a few more but will certainly break. I needed my important documents in a hurry and was luckily able to figure out a manual solution and open the safe. DO NOT BUY THIS BADLY MADE PRODUCT.

Well made and easy set up
This safe arrived today. Well packaged an no issues with dents or dings. I have other Sentry Safes and like the others my new code was easy to set up on the first try. And the key works as well. Well built for what you pay for them.
