Fantastic for beginners
I am relatively new to fly tying--have about 8 months into it now. This is a great place to start--don't bother with the more abridged version that covers the 8 most popular flies unless you find it for a steal.Tom Rosenbauer is rightfully considered one of the foremost subject matter experts on fly fishing and tying, and his explanations and illustrative stories are so well written. As described, this book has 1/3 devoted to fly tying materials, 1/3 to actual fly tying instructions, and 1/3 catalog of flies Orvis carries with minimal "recipes" for them. While the skills required for tying the flies this book are definitely transferrable to many other patterns, I find the recipes for the catalog flies to be a little too minimalistic. There are occasionally more detailed notes on some of them, but most of them just list the materials and hook size and you still need to YouTube them if you can find them.

I used to have the loose-leaf
Version of this reference. That was easier to use because it stayed open but this is just ad nice a reference.
