This is stated has being v2 in the description although the images show v1. Which version is the product?

Here are the differences between versions 1 and 2, might be useful 1. The plastic parts in version 2 are moulded, not laser-cut, which greatly simplifies construction and strengthens the final product 2. Version 2 uses a standard format Arduino Nano clone plugged in to the main custom board, version 1 uses a custom board incorporating the Arudino. 3. Version 2 does not include an infra-red remote control handset, control is via a smartphone and bluetooth.

Does the penguin bot kit also require the stem or arduino ide? will it not work on it's own?

yes it works on its own. Once built the software is already loaded. You need to load the control app on your smart phone and connect using bluetooth. Works a treat.
