I'm new to fly fishing and getting my reel set up. I have a 5/6 rod/reel and 5# backer, float line and leader. Do I also use 5# tippet?

Welcome to the wonderful world of fly fishing. The tippet size depends on the size hook you are using. A 5 wt single handed rod can use hooks sizes from a#18 to a #6 hook.check online for a tippet chart and print it out. 3X tippet for hook sizes 6,8,10 4X tippet for hook sizes 12,14&16 and 5X tippet for hook sizes 14,16&18. Hope this helps. If you use a per made leader the end of the leader is your tippet size. As you use the last 18 inches or so cutting and adding flys , at that point you can change your leader out or tie in new tippet to match what was there tippet is cheaper then a new leader. You all so must match the leader size or you may have problems turning over the fly . Good luck and don’t get frustrated.
