Ballistol Multi-Purpose Can Lubricant Cleaner Protectant 16 oz, 2 Pack with 1 Sprayer

In my humble opinion, gun maintenance requires two kinds of lubricants. One is a heavier lube applied very sparingly to just a few key friction surfaces. The other is a CLP/light lubricant like Ballistol. Of the class of CLP/light lubricants, I believe Ballistol is the very best. First of all, it workds. It loosens carbon, aids cleaning, and leaves a nice, relatively thin lubricating layer on the metal. This is excellent for light friction, protection from degradation, and polishing. Some people also use Ballistol as the primary lubricant for friction points and in most scenarios it should be fine, but as I mentioned earlier, I do like another thicker lubricant for those surfaces (protip: make the heavier lubricant yourself by mixing Mobil One synthetic grease and 10W30 oil - I'm serious). My shelf has a dozen cans of Ballistol because I use it so liberally. It is truly a fantastic product.

Used this extensively last couple of weeks in a remote area where water conservation is important. I had two muzzle loaders and two BPCRs, so lots of cleaning needed I had my doubts but it performed much better than expected The 25% mixture very easily removed black powder residue and left barrels spotless with only a tiny bit of protective film. So far no rust It gives your stock an oiled finish look I intend to continue to use it!

Actually keeps fouling from sticking to the gun. The layer left in from the previous cleaning is such that I simply disassemble and wipe down then reapply. About the 3rd cleaning it had become adjusted to this new life of not needing to be scoured. Is good for wood and leather, I use it for just a grab and go oil, does alright in an ultrasonic cleaner when diluted properly, and it emulsifies! It's not an ultra pain in the brass to wash it off. Not a good lotion. I mean, it felt good, but I had to remind myself that environmentally freindly doesn't mean it belongs on dry cracked skin. Just a really, really great all around oil for cleaning, lubricating, and protecting things. Don't know what to do with my Break Free CLP now.

I like the fact that it cleans well and lubricates well and it won't kill you. Not a huge fan of the initial smell. Imagine a combination of licorice/anise mixed with a hint of stinky socks and sour milk. Don't get me wrong...those are all manly aromas but I can usually only handle one of them at any given time. There is a saving grace. After application the smell pretty much dissipates. Oh yeah...it doesn't dry up like some lubricants can. I give it 5 stars because it does what it says it does. The smell really doesn't bother me that much but others have been drivin to distraction over it. I recommend getting a small quantity to see what you think and go from there.

Well, what can I say? It does work, and is the best for black powder shooters since you can mix it with water and make a highly effective cleaner and not have to worry about rust. In fact, in most general areas of a BP gun you won't even need to add any Ballistol since the amount of oil left behind is more than adequate for rust prevention. A couple of extra drops at full strength when lube properties are needed and this stuff does the trick. The only negative is it smells like 52 week unwashed you-know-what to me, but others like the smell. I guess it is a matter of genetics or something.

I clean most of my guns in Ballistol. I mostly use this as a CLP, but on guns that run drier, I'll also use it as a lubricant. On guns at risk for rust, I've used thick coatings and have yet to get any tacky residue, even after an extended period. I'll caution you on the smell though. If you're hunting, I would advise either cleaning / lubing far in advance so the smell disapates. It's extremely strong. I use around the house occasionally to fix squiky doors or chairs since it's non-toxic, but even a small amount will fill the room with a very pugnant odor. I would advise if you have a pregnant wife to stay away. Maybe limit to garage or outside use if anyone is sensitive to smells. If you're a CCW, I'd tell you, again, CLP far enough in advance so you don't turn heads with the odor.

I have been using the aerosol version of Ballistol and was getting low on it so I decided to purchase the non-aerosol as the price per ounce is cheaper. Although it works like the aerosol version, there are some things that are different. First off the viscosity of the non-aerosol is like motor oil where as the aerosol version is almost as thin as water. The smell is much stronger in the non-aerosol version. And I do mean much stronger. It comes with a spray handle to use but the lubricant is too thick and will only come out as stream rather than a wider angle spray. The spray handle has settings for both stream and spray but there is no apparent difference. The down side to this is one ends up using more lubricant/cleaner than intended. If you are not aware, it will help remove gun powder residue but does not remove copper or lead in firearm barrels. It can also be used with water in ultrasonic cleaners. It turns the water a "milky" white color and leaves an oily-like residue on the brass cartridges if you just air dry them. I have an old toaster oven with a convection fan that I set at the lowest temperature (150 deg F) and dry the cartridges for about two hours and let them set in the oven and cool off for another couple of hours. The oily film is not there when they are dried in this manner, but you don't need case lubricant with this method. I have also found that this stuff is great for lubricating squeaky door hinges and other friction surfaces. Pros: Good lubricant for handguns and rifles Works well on most things that need anti-friction lubrication Works fairly well in remove burnt gun powder residue If wiped on in a very light coat it "disappears" when dry but leaves a finish kind of like a well season cast iron pan Cons: Expensive compare to other lubricants The smell might be too much for some folks and it lingers for a very long time Does not spray very well. I do recommend using this product but you have to take into account the cons listed above.

It is a very old school oil cleaner and lubricant and protectant ...Every old school Gunsmith will recommend it for anything that needs an oiling ... But I personally use it for oiling the fretboards of guitars And even for keeping strings in top condition… I find that when you spray and wipe down your strings you can breathe some new life into them and remove days and weeks and months of corrosion and finger funk build up... Black powder you should always use grease because what will happen is the black powder when mixed with this stuff will form burnt on crap inside of the barrel and form these tar deposits that will never come out Without a hell of a lot of scrubbing

How did I not learn about this product sooner. I have been using it where I need something better than WD 40. Worked very well restoring rubber on my laser transition
