Good, but could have been GREAT!
This book is a great companion to Jake Perrine's other book - "Producing Music with...". It covers some topics more in depth such as mixing automation and using MIDI controllers.Jake has an easy-to-follow, laid-back writing style that will keep you interested as he moves through various topics. My only complaint is that this book is being marketed as a more in depth exploration of Ableton Live, and yet 50 or 60 pages are wasted duplications of the exact same basic information given in the Producing Music... guidebook. Bummer dude.Since this book has 30% less fresh material than the other book, It should cost 30% less IMHO.That being said, I do not regret buying both books, they are going for bargain prices and there is a good solid foundation to had in Ableton Live by doing the all the exercises in both books.Peace.

review
jakes enthusiasm for music production is immediately evident in his book. It's very well written, and jakes knowledge of ableton is top drawer. The book follows a project that is on the accompanying cd, explaining various techniques in ableton live from keyboard shortcuts to mastering in live. I personally found the sound design and mastering chapters a little bit lightweight in content, as these are such huge areas they could have been covered in a bit more depth. If your hoping to learn to design your own patches with operator or any other built in synths this wont be covered. Having said that there is comprehensive coverage of using racks, processing, midi and controllers, and mixing and automation to name a few. Overall i thought the book was excellent value for money and I would recommend the book for anyone looking to improve their skills with abletons software.

A good complement
This book is the first's complement. There's a lot of overlapping between both, but it's a great book. The first on lacks what this one gets and so on. I recommend both for the beginners. The mastering section is short, but Perrine convinced me about his reasons. I think if you put attention on every word he says, as a doctrine, you could really improve your recordings. Some people read this quickly and can't understand exactly the deeper lessons behind it.It has fewer, but longer, exercises. It is harder to follow it sometimes. So, I recommend studying this material (read both twice), not just playing with it.

WOW
jake perrine has the understanding and the skills to convey this understanding. not only that, but his writing is a joy to read. he's smart, he's funny and his books are very well organized. he'll lead you logically from one step to the next in ableton, all the time deepening your understanding and unlocking more and more potential. after even a portion of the books, you'll imagine projects you've never before conceived, and be able to realize them efficently and with increasing excitement! can you say 'open sesame'?

Great book for getting started with Ableton
Really impressed by this book and the preceding one in the series. Mr. Perrine gives a great overview of the program and keeps it informative, but not so textbook as to bore you to death. Learned a lot of fundamental techniques that need to be learned in order for you to truly progress as a producer. Would love it if he kept the books coming and continued diving further into producing with Ableton!

great info
Definitely worth getting to learn how to use Ableton Live. This helped me out a lot and was able to start using it within just a few weeks!

where's the audio samples?
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. There are some benefits to it, but I shouldn't have to work so hard to see them. First I shouldn't have to buy the first book if that is not what I need just to be able to use the second book. Secondly the vst elek7ro did not work for anything. Lastly there were no audio files that came with the book that would allow me to use for working though the exercises that are in the book which I'm willing to bet come in the first book.

good start to Abelton live
I found this book to be very helpful, I had not used Ableton live before and this book and his first book really helped in my understanding of the workings of Ableton. this book is a little more advanced to the first book and I find it to be well written and easy to understand and that was what I was looking for.

very good
This book is very good, I really wish it would show more examples rather than just talk about what should be done in theory. But You will learn a lot from this book, and come out a better producer. The Author seems truly passionate and funny as well,
