Lots of bad reviews. Are the latest ones actually 1/8" thick and good quality?

This screw checker is actually 0.080" thick, which is considerably smaller than 1/8" (0.125"). It is made of steel. It works fine for its intended purpose. They need to change the specs to match the actual product though.

Is this tool for machine type bolts and screws, or can it also be used for wood and sheet metal screws as well? I saw one review saying so.

The numbered, unthreaded holes down the left side are used to size machine screws or wood screws.

Are you asking what size Pop Rivet to use to replace a bolt or screw? Pop Rivets are usually specified two ways. The first is the "diameter" of the hole that is drilled in the two (or perhaps more)for them to fit in. The other is the "grip range" of the thickness of the two pieces being joined. So if you want a Pop Rivet to replace bolt/screw, first measure the diameter of the hole(may use a dill bit for this if you lack other tools) and then the thickness parts you are joining. Good Luck and remember once you Pop Rivet something the only way to take it apart is to drill the Rivet out.

Are the numbers printed on the surface or embossed into the metal?

It looks very much like they are printed on the surface, maybe with epoxy ink, maybe not, but the thing comes in a nice clear plastic envelope, and I keep mine in that envelope. I don't use it all that frequently anyway--most screws I recognize, but if I don't, this is a real handy gadget. If you're seriously worried about losing the printing, you could Xerox or scan the thing when you first get it, and keep a copy in some safe place.
