This tool works well when used as intended / designed AND the log is properly steadied. Recommend that you look on you tube at the different uses for drawknives vs bark spuds first- I sharpened it right out of the box like all edged tools I have ever purchased. The head was slightly loose as others mentioned but that didn't matter after about the 4th push against the bark- it jammed in and steadied just fine. This is curved to work under the bark and peel AROUND the trunk, not long ways. A draw knife is a better tool for working long ways on thinner bark. Still, it works OK long ways to get a cut started if the curve is pointed down towards the bark, NOT up like a ski. Since logs are round and tend to want to roll, having the log steadied and waist height in a "V" notch post will help make this tool work most effectively.

The blade is satisfyingly heavy, with just enough of an edge. The only fault I can find with it is that the unfinished handle fits loose with a single machine screw. I don't have much experience with debarking tools, so maybe this is a feature? Time will tell how well it will hold up.

Bark removal made easy.

As delivered this is a useless tool. The handle wobbled around in the shank. Besides needing to be sharpened the bevel is on the bottom of the tool so even after you sharpen it it's essentially worthless because the angle of attack is way too steep. As others have said, it won't peel off well bonded bark. But rather than return it, which I probably should have done, I reworked the handle until it fit into the socket properly. Then I cut the working end so the bevel is on top of the cutting head, then sharpened it. After those changes the tool works well and will peel off tightly bonded bark. A shallower bend to the cutter head together with a longer handle would likely make the tool easier to use and require less effort to peel the bark off. I do not recommend this tool. Unless you are willing to modify it similar to what I did it will not peel well bonded bark. l

Sonfar this has worked well to remove bark from a recent cut tree of approximately 12" diameter. Isn't particularly sharp, but then it doesn't really need to be to peel bark. Nice strong wooden handle.

Too small to do the job. Inferior all around. Handle was fastened by a first grader, no edge on the steel either. Pretty much a toy!

The product is flimsy and not appropriate for heavy debarking. It is cheaply made.
