Applewood Books is a small, independent publishing company specializing in books about history, the natural world, and other topics of popular interest. Founded in 1974 by two former high school teachers, Applewood Books has been publishing quality nonfiction for over 40 years. Applewood’s first book was The Book of Deer, a translation of an ancient Scottish manuscript that tells the story of a sixth-century monk who brought Christianity to the Scottish Highlands. This book was followed by The Secret Life of the Red Fox, which was based on the pioneering research of wildlife biologist David Mech. These two books helped establish Applewood’s reputation for publishing well-researched and engaging books on topics that are both timely and timeless. Over the years, Applewood has published many other notable books, including The Journals of Lewis and Clark, which was edited by historian Bernard DeVoto; Our National Parks, by John Muir; and The Way to Willowbrook, by journalist Jacob Riis. In recent years, Applewood has been focusing on books about the American Revolution and the Civil War, two of the most important events in our nation’s history.
