Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this you must provide carbonates (Reef Carbonate™) and calcium (Reef Advantage Calcium™ or Reef Complete®). Whereas competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Carbonate™ is made with a blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This blend of salts results in Reef Carbonate™ yielding a pK of roughly 9.0 in saltwater (higher than competing products). In a closed reef system, the multitude of organics produced by reef inhabitants tends to force pH downward, but the advantage of Reef Carbonate’s™ higher pK is a stabilization of pH around 8.3-8.4. Thanks** A: I would not use this in a freshwater tank. If you are worried about hard/soft water or you want a ph change for a special plant. I suggest you put a baggy of crushed coral in your filter and let that dissolve over time and repeat every few months. However having both a large reef aquarium as well as a smaller freshwater aquarium I have never really had to worry about my KH in my freshwater. In fact I use no chemicals in my freshwater tank as it's so easily self sustaining. Also not trying to sound like a jerk here but it's gonna come out that way I am sure, but if something says REEF or SALTWATER don't put it in freshwater. There are only a few things that can be used in both and this isn't one of them. I keep my KH around 10 in my 93 gal mixed reef. You should try to keep kh above 8 if you have hard corals imo. Reef carbonate does not contain any calcium so you need another source. I use ESV b-ionic calcium to maintain my ca level at 450 or higher. The carbonate is for the coral growth and health. Your ph levels are very important to your corals growth and health as well.
