Review: Purchased to troubleshoot ice dam problem - This helped so much with finding out why an ice dam was happening (which had already caused water down the interior wall). We'd tried an energy audit w/power company, but they don't go up in the attic. By the way, they had a Flir One Pro (essentially same as this unit). We'd had an insulation company go up in the attic, but they didn't have have an I/R camera and couldn't find why there was a problem. Finally, I had to get to the bottom of this and found that a shared wall of the quadplex had heat coming up out of the sheet rock, approaching 60+ Deg.F at top of roof while it was 10 Deg.F outside. Pros: Has ability to show temperature at cross hairs. Even used it to check if my granddaughter was running a fever (it was 201 Deg.F)! You can also show people the normal image to understand what it is you're looking at (see attached photos). I've had insulation guys ask how much that cost because they were impressed! Cons: It didn't always seem to stay attached well to phone and while up in the attic it fell off in my pocket (while traversing). Not fun shifting through blown insulation to find it! A loop to secure to wrist or somewhere would be nice! I may come up with a way to attach it myself. As others have said, it would be nice to have longer battery life! It sometimes appears as if it isn't connected, or momentarily connects and disconnects when batter isn't charged enough. It would be nice to manipulate saved images later for a more detailed view (i.e. zoom in or change cross hair location to get different temperatures, or change color scheme). Overall, very happy with this unit and recommend for troubleshooting or fun!
Review: So Much Better Than Spot IR - Have only used it a few times but it is so much better than a spot reading infrared device mostly because ... there is no doubt what is hot and what is not (i.e. easier to aim); it can quickly show the warmest (or coldest) areas; and it can capture a photo for later use. It has two cameras -one to image the IR (heat) and one to cleverly overlay an outline of what features are in the frame. I used it to see how hot my circuit breakers were and this really impressed my electrician. Also used it to see how effective my hot water insulating wraps are (not too sure 'bout them now). And I started to survey how good my windows and door seals are (tiny leaks add up ya know). A downside is that it needs a phone (I have Android but Apples are available). The FLIR app downloaded easily and worked 1st time. Battery life seems fine though I've only used it for maybe 10 minutes at a time so far. Conclusions: Use this FLIR camera if you need a pic for later use and to know exactly what you're looking at. Keep the spot reading IR for your 'quick and dirty' hot peeks.

A: It depends on how hot the ghosts are.  This simply detects heat signatures.  The ghost of Thomas Jefferson, probably not so hot, but the ghost of Jayne Mansfield will probably burn the screen.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Purchased to troubleshoot ice dam problem

This helped so much with finding out why an ice dam was happening (which had already caused water down the interior wall). We'd tried an energy audit w/power company, but they don't go up in the attic. By the way, they had a Flir One Pro (essentially same as this unit). We'd had an insulation company go up in the attic, but they didn't have have an I/R camera and couldn't find why there was a problem. Finally, I had to get to the bottom of this and found that a shared wall of the quadplex had heat coming up out of the sheet rock, approaching 60+ Deg.F at top of roof while it was 10 Deg.F outside. Pros: Has ability to show temperature at cross hairs. Even used it to check if my granddaughter was running a fever (it was 201 Deg.F)! First off, the device works perfectly and does everything it promises. They were thoughtful and made the USB-C connector adjustable so it can fit even with a hard phone case, very smart. The resolution is good and it does show temperature differences, so it'll be great to use for identifying problematic circuits, air leaks or other issues as it's designed for. The reason I deducted half a star is that I kind of wish I had bought a standalone unit instead. This thing is well built so when it's hanging off the end of my Galaxy S23 I am worried the weight is straining my phone's USB C port. You have to be a little careful not to whip it around too much or inadvertently put any pressure on it. I'm thinking having a dedicated unit while more expensive would just be a little better than using your phone for yet another feat of magic, especially if you're in an attic or outdoors where the environment isn't the best for a phone. I can't really ding the product too much for this as it's clearly sold as a phone add on and it does do what it promises, but for me I wish I had bought the dedicated unit. One other minor issue is that in my hot climate, I am not sure this will really tell me if my outlets and fixtures are leaking hot air unless I have a significant vacuum in the house (either with a blower or because of a leaking duct pushing air into the attic which creates a draw inside. This isn't so much a shortcoming of the product, but it is how science works so it means this won't automatically tell you everything without some additional tools or work. My power company did an energy audit and hooked a blower up to the front door to pressurize the house and then used an incense stick to see if the smoke rushed into wall outlets, plumbing fixtures, etc. (it did!). For this to work the best, I think you'd need to run the blower backwards to create suction so this will see hot air rushing into the house. I need to figure that one out. Perhaps a portable AC unit with a single exhaust hose will fit the bill as those actually suck air out of the house which then causes hot outside air to be sucked into the house, which is one reason they are less efficient than window units. The dryer may help with that as well, although I don't know if either of these will move enough air to draw in from the whole house. Looks like an interesting project to try! If you can swing getting a standalone FLIR then go for it. If you need something portable and less expensive for occasional use, this one absolutely works if you use it correctly, just be careful not to break your phone connector. It's not that likely, but it is a risk.
